XPS 8700, ram upgrade discussion

I have an XPS 8700 Core i7-4770 3.40 GHz. I am thinking about increasing the RAM. First question is will it help the functioning that much? Second question is, if will help what should I buy? Do I just buy additional RAM and install it or do I need to buy more RAM replacing what is currently in the unit?

if you already have 16 gb adding more ram would not have much effect unless you do video editing CAD or content rendering.  even 8 GB is good enough for most apps and 16gb is good enough for most gaming

the 8700 has 4 dimm, max ram is 32 gb (4x8 GB),

if you only need 16, easiest is 4x4 GB.

if you only need 8, can do 2x4 GB or 4x2 Gb depending on what you have

if you currently have ddr3-1600, try to add ddr3 ram also ddr3-1600.  mixing different speed of ddr3 is not good

"First question is will it help the functioning that much?"

It will help if the applications you typically use need more RAM. In that case, adding RAM will allow those applications to run faster.

@redxps630 I have 12gb. I am not a gamer, so it sounds like I am alright. I just wasn't sure with all the extra features Microsoft is adding to Windows. Thanks

You can't (easily) run Windows later than Win 10 on the XPS 8700.  So there isn't anything to worry about "extra features" that MS may add to Win 11 and subsequent versions.

Microsoft will be supporting Win 10, without any feature updates, until 10-2025.  So you have ~1.5 years to keep using it, as is, on your XPS 8700.
