XPS 8300, PSU replacement

Hi, I was looking through the posts for an answer in regards to which PSU is suitable to replace the existing Dell Model AC460AD-00 PSU? I am out of my depth here, in regards to knowing what to select and it's a virtual minefield of PSU units to choose from. It's more or less standard, never overclocked etc. It has had a crucial 1TB SSD installed as one of the original drives failed and an extra 8GB ram fitted to the standard configuration.

Any assistance would be great appreciated.

Thank you.

Why do you think you need one?

Firstly the pc would just switch off when playing H265 videos through DivX player (Gopro footage).  This was just random.

It started to happen more and more.

But past few days, watching .mkv files, it started to turn off, as though plug pulled from the wall after about 5 mins of viewing.

Then yesterday, it got to the point, that it was powering down when the desktop screen was showing, nothing running etc.

I have no idea if it is indeed the PSU, but searching the web for answers this seems to be the common consensus.

I don't think it's the 460 watt PSU.

These are the ones that work fine and are available today.

Be aware that the B3 BT BQ G3 etc same vendor DO NOT WORK.

I'm not going to go into why for each one.  I feel like a broken record on this.

The point is that combined output on the 5VSB rails must be 3 AMPS minimum and the 3.3v Rails must be 142W Minimum.

More is fine Less is not.

460W is typical low end even for the New Aurora.

Note the Combined output for 3.3v railsNote the Combined output for 3.3v rails

Power supplies are not single rail, single voltage, and ONE SPEC on ONE RAIL of WATTS.

Combined output 3.3v goes UP to 225W on the Dell 850 and 875W unit.

So when dell has 30 AMPS on the 3.3v rails and 32 AMPS on the 5v rail and others with 850 or 875W power supply have 20 AMPS max on 3.3v/5v  you can see why its NOT EVER WORKING.

NOTE AMPS on 3.3v rails and 5v rails is HIGHNOTE AMPS on 3.3v rails and 5v rails is HIGH

Thank you for your reply and links.

Are the units in the links available in Europe, UK as best buy is more North Americas.

Unfortunately your technical advice, voltages etc go right over my my head. I have no basis of understanding. What electrical experience I have is with commercial, 3 phase, limit /micro switches in lifting equipment.

I will do a local search for the units provided in your links.

Thank you. 👍

I am thrilled and delighted to report that i have successfully (and easily) replaced my XPS 8300's original PSU with a Corsair RM650x PSU.  There was enough space where original PSU was to use this slightly larger PSU. Had ongoing and worsening issues with XPS 8300 not powering up and through trial and error found I could gingerly get a power up if i detached ALL devices, which after months made me realize the PSU was the culprit. Had all kinds of issues that did not initially suggest PSU.   Almost thought i needed to replace system but not now.

Various power calculators said i needed at least 450w+ so the original PSU was at its limits (and possibly failing after 8yrs anyhow), although a few PSU manufacturers pushed 750w+.  Since my current load was about 450w+ i reasoned 650w would be more than adequate and wanted high performance/low fan noise upgrade.

I have added:

  • Windows 10 Pro 64bit
  • an nVidia GeForce card incl audio
  • 32Gb RAM (think i might increase it again)
  • 500Gb SSD (use for OS and pgms only)
  • attach 2x 2Tb ext USB 3.1 HDD's for data and backup respectively (after several catastrophic HDD failures i now ALWAYS keep data separate from OS & pgms!!!)
  • BD Optical drive
  • USB 3.1 4port card
  • Intel Ethernet card
  • and NOW -- Corsair RM650x
  • Seal Shield LED keyboard

With the original Intel i7 2600 @3.4GHz my system is running superbly, ultra fast.  Kudos to Dell for building solid hw platform although drivers/BIOS no longer updated/supported which is WRONG especially BIOS, but thankfully most original components have been replaced and are supported generically.

My power issues are 100% completely resolved, system starts up in a flash and running cool, quiet and reliably.

There must be multiple versions of RM650 because some of them are almost too long to fit into a Dell case.

150mm x 86mm x 160mm

XPS 8300 8500 8700 have specific DIMENSIONS that must be adhered to as well as SPECIFIC power requirements on the 3.3v/5v rails combined being 25Amps on each of those as well as 146+ Watts combined.

That means that specific models even from the same vendor work and others DO NOT WORK AT ALL.

EVGA 750 B1 110-B1-0750-VR  works fine BT B2 BQ G2 etc DOES NOT. BQ is made by Andyson while no-one knows who made BT unit, it's probably made by HEC. BT is such a bad unit that EVGA doesn't even list it on their site.  There is no point in something Bigger Due to the fact that you CANNOT USE more than 1 card.

So Both Physical Dimensions as well as Power Output combined on the 3.3v/5v Rails works for the B1

This is what it looks like Fitted into the case.  NOTE The TIGHT FIT.

On many other vendors as the 12v power goes up the power on the 3.3V/5V rails max power GOES DOWN to 20A/100W max.  However in the case of dell 875w unit the power goes UP to 225w on the 3.3V/5V rails to 30Amps and 225W Combined .
