@redxps630

"dimension E310 case might do "

No it won't  XPS 420 has 7 in one audio, firewire, and other things like the top color LCD that NONE of the other models has.

Why do you insist on posting Nonsense for a model that you do not own?

I have this exact model and I can tell you for a fact that E310 case absolutely will not work.

ONLY THE REAL CASE AND CABLES WORKONLY THE REAL CASE AND CABLES WORK

Only another (backwards) BTX Dell case ... XPS-410, XPS-420, Dimension 9200 ... other OptiPlex machines that look like those ... like that.

And really, unless it has a true Intel Quad-Core processor in it ... it is not really worth messing with (if even then).

Optiplex MT cases are too small for XPS 420 motherboard.  You need a full size BTX case such as XPS 720/710/700.

But are the connections from an XPS 420 motherboard to the front panel going to be the same in any of those other cases? Or will @Nad Dell have to figure out the wiring and do a moddy to make it work?

BTW: I just did a quick search and found an XPS 420 "full tower case" with some internal parts on the big "auction" site, but they want more for shipping than for the case itself. So maybe make a very low bid offer...

an old dimension E310 case might do if you find a cheap deal on eBay or local.  you might find one free because it is quite old and previous owner may want to get rid of it.  good for tinkering.

What is complete model number of 320 and 920 you are referring to?

XPS 420, like the 410/400 boards are not rectangular.  A BTX case needs to be extra wide to accommodate it, not to mention whether the case BTX heatsink mounting holes matches.  You need to check whether they physically fit the other Dell OEM case before taking on electrical challenge.

I have a 320 case and am modding it. I was ordering a Dell 920 system board for it to see if it would fit because it is also "backwards" like the 420. Is the 420 a better board? Don't flame me - I just mod old cases and like to renew old computers for fun. I have reconfigured old Dell cases with a pop rivet gun to get the proprietary backplate issues remedied.  Also I do a lot of Dremel tooling. Thank you everyone for your input - always fun dealing with Dell OEM issues - if you like the challenge. TY

Optiplex GX320 is a model.

Dell OptiPlex GX320

(Pentium Dual Core E2140 1.6GHz, 512MB RAM, 160GB HDD, XP Home)

No such GX920 Model however.

XPS model that is closest but not the same to the GX620 is the XPS 400.  XPS 400 is a much better model with newer chipset but NO onboard INTEL Video so it needs a GPU.

The GX520 and GX620 come in the cases that look like the GX320  HOWEVER the GX320 is not the same and between USFF SFF DT and MT none of them are the same. Cables and Pinouts are not documented for ANY model.

There are Various Sizes

MT (Mini Tower)
DT (Desktop)
MFF (Micro Form Factor)
SFF (Small Form Factor)
USFF (Ultra Small Form Factor)
