No more "advanced Cooling" ?
XPS 8960
I'm a bit of a freak for quiet PC so I took "liquid cooling"
Unfortunately I should I read the posts on that topics here before
It's not silent, not very noisy, but clearly noticeable and distracting even at idle.
I called DELL support to get an "advanced cooling" unit and I was told it was not possible to get one. Even after arguing I could installed it myself they didn't want to send me one and basically said it was just not available at all. I actually went to website system configurator and I could not find trace of the advance cooling option that was there when I originally picked my PC.
Does that mean DELL has pulled that option from their offering?
Anyone knows?
Very tempted to put a 3rd party "liquid cooling" or "classic" unit but I will wait a bit to not void my warranty. Anybody have recommendations for a really quiet cooling option either liquid or not on XPS 8960? (or 8950 which apparently is similar)
thx

Commencing with the XPS 8960, Dell's so-called 'advanced cooling' tower cooler is only offered with Intel 'K' CPUs. That's why I chose the i7 13700K processor for my 8960, even though I have no plans to overclock.
With that said, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to replace Dell's water cooler with Dell's tower cooler. You'll have to buy the tower cooler from Dell parts (item no. 321-BIKM) and you'll either have to install it yourself or pay someone else to do it, since Dell doesn't do upgrades.
With respect to third party coolers: You are quite correct in that this will void your warranty. In addition, Dell uses a proprietary heat sink assembly (for no good reason that I can think of) so you'll need a third party cooler that can work with your computer.

@Bulldog
Thx for the part #
But doesn't seem to show up on Dell's spare part website
And you're right configurator allows advanced cooling with i7k and i9k but not i9.... not sure why... weird

dell part public website is notoriously user unfriendly. It almost always results in none.
the DP/N I sent came out of third party searching engine connected to Dell internal database. somehow someone figured out a back door.

Agree with @redxps630 re: Dell's user unfriendly parts website.
You can also try contacting Dell Sales (not technical support, which will give you grief).

I replaced the "box" air cooler with the advanced (tower) air cooler on my wife's XPS 8950. Better CPU cooling and very quiet. I found a new one on Amazon. Installed it myself. Easy upgrade.

I just got my XPS 8960 with the i7-13700K and noticed the pancake cooler. I am very annoyed that Dell apparently traded off cpu temp over performance by throttling the cpu when temps get over some safe threshold. Leaves a lot of computing cycles on the table.
I am equally annoyed that Dell does not automatically choose and upgraded cooler when the 13700K cpu is selected.
Anyway, is it certain that the C253W cooler will mount and work OK on the 8960?
thank you

A search on Amazon reveals the C253W being sold for the XPS 8950 & XPS 8960.
As I wrote previously, it performs well for my wife's XPS 8950. Easy install, very quiet and no more thermal throttling at 100% load.
Hope this helps.
