Windows Xp

I need to re install windows Xp on my 5150. It is being shipped but can anyone tell me do I try to reinstall it in safe mode as this is the only way my pc is working right now.  There is nothing wrong with my hard drive but after talking to Dell suport they are now shipping out my missing Windows XP which is what I would have tried in the first place.  If anyone can give instructions that I can print off and bring home I would be very grateful

Many thanks

You cannot reinstall the OS from Safe Mode.  Boot from the CD and either do a Repair Installation or a Clean Install.  Boot form the CD and either do a repair install or a clean install.

Read the links.

A repair install repairs missing or corrupt files.  A clean install wipes the drive clean before installing the OS.  YOur data would be lost but you should be backing up your data to external media to begin with.

Hi I now have the cds to reinstall Windows XP but my problem is now that my Son has his ipod synced(?)
to this pc also he has a lot of Itunes downloaded but we need to save them if I have to do a
clean install.  Is there another safe mode other than safe mode with networking that will allow me to go in and back up the stuff on a memory stick.  I do not know how to back up on Cds sorry

Many thanks for your help so far

The easiest way would be to purchase a portable hard drive, but this can also be used as your backup strategy for the future.

One other question to ask is the PC registered with iTunes?  Not the iPod but the iTunes iste.  You will need to "Deauthorize" the PC with iTunes to keep your 5 machine limit.

When everything is backed up, gather all your CD's and a cup of coffee, or three.

I would also suggest you run this program and let it create an inventory of your system, showing all installed programs and their associated Product keys.

I think my son will try to use a spare Ipod as a back up but for now I was thinking of trying to do a repair install but please confirm that this should leave all files ok on computer.

Thanks a million

A "repair" will leave the files intact.

Which safe mode do I go in to in order to back up documents on to a memory stick?  I am operating my
sytem in safe mode with networking(I press F8 after Dell comes up) I dont appear to be able to back up using
computer this way and I need to do it before trying to repair install. I also need to back up on to a spare
Ipod the itunes saved on the Pc
Sorry about all the questions but just feel helpless right now

Regards

Either will be fine for copying to USB media.  Safe Mode or Safe w/Networking.

If it were me, I would invest in a portable USB hard drive to backup these items.  This would be cheaper than another iPod.
