"Windows not Genuine" after malware infection
Son's E1705 suffered a malware infection, which he as able to remove using MBAM. Looking at the MBAM log, I recognize 'Vundo' but there was other stuff too.
The machine now boots with no background image, and in the lower right it indicates that "Windows not genuine'. Posted the issue at a microsoft site, but any mention of malware and the 'experts' there just want the user to do a clean install. I do not want to do that if there is any way around it.
This is Vista Business, build 6002. Any suggestions as to how to troubleshoot this issue?

ddeerrff,
Thank you for contacting the Dell Community Forums. It sounds like the malware infection may have tampered with a Vista system file. Vista has a service that detects system file tampering, and if it finds evidence of such tampering it can produce this kind of message. Take a look at this post from the Microsoft forums and see if it helps resolve your issue.

Thanks for the quick reply Chris.
I actually posted my MGADiag log on that forum here, but don't seem to be getting any replies. I see I do have an entry under "TTS Error:" and the indicated date is consistant with the malware infection/removal, so perhaps this is the right track.
I have limited access to the machine, so it may be a few days before i can follow up.
