Windows is deleting print jobs from print queue

OK, here's my situation:

I have a laptop with a HP deskjet 350 portable printer attached.  When I send a print job to the printer, the job stays in the queue for about one second then mysteriously deletes itself without ever printing.  I get no errors, no feedback from the OS....nothing.  Furthermore, I've checked the printing policies, there's nothing defined.  I've restarted the print spooler, it works fine (it's also set to "Automatic", like it's supposed to be).  The folder system33/spool/printer is also clear.  I also tried hooking up a co-worker's HP deskjet 340 portable printer to my laptop and that one worked fine.  Seeing this, I then installed my original 350 onto a different computer and it worked fine on that one.  The only combination that doesn't work is MY printer on MY computer.  I've also tried deleting and re-installing the printer several time, downloading new drivers off the web, and even using both the 350 and the 350 Monochrome drivers....nothing worked.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Obviously, that should be "system32", not "system33" as I decided to put it.  Sorry for the typo.

Are you using the parallel interface? The only time I've seen a problem like that with an HP printer, the issue was that the printer parallel interface was returning "ready" status even when it wasn't actually ready for more data. The symptom was as you described - jobs just disappeared without anything printing.

When you tried the other printer, did you try its cable? I also recall that turning the printer on before the PC it was attached to improved things. You might also try changing the operating mode of the parallel interface in the PC's BIOS.

HP's had trouble with the "ready" signal in their parallel printer interfaces for a long time!

Yes, I am using the parallel interface.  As for trying a different printer cable, I didn't explicitly try the cable from the second printer with the faulty printer, but I did try the faulty printer and its cable on a different machine and it worked fine, which, to me, suggests a problem with the machine.  Also, I did change the BIOS settings, but to no avail.

Thanks for the reply

I agree, except that you had tried a different printer and it worked. And since it's a laptop, replacing the parallel interface isn't easy! You might try removing the interface using the Device Manager, and reboot to see if it's redected correctly. I kind of suspect that's not going to change anything. Is it possible to use the printer's USB interface instead? I suppose for completeness you could try the other parallel cable.
