Windows 10 License Key

Just bought a bunch of Inspiron 17 5000 laptops with Win 10 pro preinstalled.

I am in the process of upgrading the HD to SSD's with a clean install. The plan being to create a master and then clone the HD to the other laptops. I've tested this and it works to a point.

All  the SSD are then running the masters license key that was injected when OS was installed. I need to be able to change these to their own product keys along with renaming them. In the past the license key has been on a sticker on the back of the laptop, not anymore it seems. All I have is a DELL Win 10 OS disc for each laptop with a unique code on the sleeve starting CN-07PF46-????-???-????.

Any idea's where I can get the license key from for each laptop?

The product keys are etched in the BIOS. You can retrieve them using this program; ShowKeyPlus.

Once retrieved, go to the Settings app, click on update & security, then activation on the left hand side and change product key. Input the OEM product key shown in ShowKeyPlus and click next to activate Windows. Repeat this process for each system.

In my opinion, your method of imaging the computers should have worked with Windows 10 as attempting to activate under normal conditions should have found the etched Windows 10 product key, update it on the install & successfully activate it. However, if you didn't use a Dell OEM recovery image of Windows 10, this might be the reason as to why that didn't work.

Welcome to the Dell Community @juttapc

It is electronically stored in the BIOS and or with Microsoft.

If the laptop ever had W10 installed it will automatically activate when you go on-line.

If not any W7 COA will still activate the same version of W10. "Changes coming at the end of 2020"

The same image can be used on hundreds of laptops if the laptop had W10 before it will automatically activate.

Best regards,

Is Microsoft finally closing the free Windows 10 upgrade loophole at the end of 2020?
