What is System Firmware in Device Manager?

Hi,

in Device Manager there is a new section called System Firmware. There is an update going from 10.0.16299.15 (2006) to 0.1.2.1 (2016).

Someone know if I should update? What exactly is the System Firmware? Is it a kind of BIOS?

I read on internet a lot of people having problems after installing the update, so I don’t know if I should just keep the older version.

thank you

Nic727,

If you have any issues with devices you may want to update the firmware. If not, it is up to you whether you want to update or not.

There are two types of firmware that can be serviced via Windows: system firmware and device firmware. System firmware is responsible for providing critical boot and runtime services to the system as a whole, and device firmware is associated with a particular device integrated into a system.A firmware update is a software program that can be used to update the firmware in these devices. For example, a user could download a firmware update for a network router that enhances its capabilities or fixes an issue. Firmware updates are available from hardware manufacturers.ice firmware is associated with a particular device integrated into a system.

Which firmware is being updated?  After updating System Firmware in Device Manager, I often find Support Assistant finds more updates for devices, e.g. BIOS, wireless, and/or Bluetooth.

On my XPS 13 9370, Device Manager, under Firmware there is an item System Firmware 1.6.3 so while I appreciate your answer that firmware refers to almost anything, it seems to be an item, one item and the driver version is 1.6.3.0 provided by Dell, signed by MS. If, as you say, System Firmware can refer to multiple items why is there only one driver mentioned here? The referred to driver location is under Windows>firmware>etc and it is a bin file. So I guess it might be a group of drivers...? I see nothing on Dell's website that gives any info on this although Dell is the provider. Can I assume this never gets updated or if it does it will appear on your website? I haven't been able to install Support Assist since Win 10 October update so I use Dell Update and check on Drivers section regularly to see if any drivers have been updated so I think I am able to keep up there. (I have tried trolling through Dell Community and see others with install problems but none of the discussed solutions work for me).

No firmware or BIOS update is recommended unless you are having an issue.

Never is a long time.

The rule is if its not broke don't fix it.

In electronic systems and computing, firmware is a tangible electronic component with embedded software instructions, such as a BIOS. Typically, those software instructions are used to tell an electronic device how to operate. ... Firmware is held in non-volatile memory devices such as ROM, EPROM, or flash memory.
