Unable to boot up - Windows 98 - Errors 0251, 0271, 0280 - Any ideas?

When I try to boot up my other puter, I get a black screen with the following text:

  • Event log messages, enter Setup to view
  • Warning: Error 0271: Check date and time settings
  • Warning: 0251: System CMOS checksum bad - default configuration used
  • Warning: Error: 0280: Previous boot incomplete - Default configuration used
  • Press to resume, to Setup

If I hit F1, the next page shows No Operating System found. Anyone have any ideas about what I should do? I thought about going into the scanreg/restore and see if that would help. I appreciate any help. Thanks!

Mr. Shurfine,

Those error messages indicate that your CMOS battery is dead or dying. Replace it and you should be able to boot normally again.

Beside scanreg /fix as an option for you, you can also try from the boot floppy the following command: fdisk /MBR then press enter. This command repairs the Master Boot Record.

First try entering the BIOS setup and see if you have the option to reset configuration data. If so enable or choose yes to reset the data ( this gets a new read on all hard drives on your internal host controllers in your system, and resets any changes if any were made. If the system boots after this then something was changed in the BIOS that did not agree with the read of the drive, many times this may repair the issue, it is worth a try. To check to see if the system boots up, use a boot floppy and see if you get a prompt from the floppy diskette. If you do get a prompt, you can access your hard drive and use scanreg /fix.
