For the calculator, right-click on a blank space on the desktop and select New ☞ Shortcut. In the box that opens copy / paste %SystemRoot%\System32\calc.exe ☞ next ☞ finish.
For Internet Explorer, use windows explorer and navigate to either C:\Windows\Internet Explorer or C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer and look for the blue IE icon and 'send to the desktop as a shortcut'.
the IE problem was my only issue up until this month. recently all the other things that i've stated earlier have started to happen. so i've got to figure out what to do about them. i can't live without my computer (lol). so i've got to have these problems fixed ASAP before the entire system breaks down on me.
well its to bad that this has to happen. but atleast i now know that i'm not crazy and that it's not something that i've done. i use to have aol on my old computer when i had a hewlett packard and it worked just fine. maybe i might consider going back to aol. thanks.
Since I had my computer Internet Explorer has only worked once....Ever since then it comes uo as 'Program not Responding' After contacting Dell they phoned me back and we re-booted it but that did not fix it. They then send me a pile of CD's and we did a complete system restore and that hasn't worked.
I use AOL and that works fine but certain programs, like McAfee always go through Internet Explorer to register and get updates but it always comes up as 'Program not responding'
I've just tried phoning the technical support but there was a 25 min wait
I've even emailed Microsoft but they said that as it was installed by Dell I have to contact them.
I've looked on the Microsoft Support site - there seems to be several 'fixes' available but none that seem to describe what is going on with my computer.
I've only had this thing for two weeks and apart from the IE issue it's been OK
I'm on hold at the moment to Dell Technical support
I eventually got through to Technical Support via their 'chat' facility. Unfortunately they only deal with the hardware and I now have to phone their Software Support Team tomorrow.
Their number is 0870 366 4026 if you want to give them a try. They did say that there was a 'nominal' fee involved. But as my computer is only two weeks they'd better not try to charge me.
Hmm....I might try a few things that some other people suggested to me. If not, I'm just going to spend a little money and take it to a repair shop. I mean it works enough for me to do what I really need to do. But some of the things that this computer does just isn't normal. And I've dealt with a few computers, so I know this one is acting a little weird. So I'll get it all figured out sooner or later.
Well I finally got my answer - basicaly if you use AOL - Internet Explorer will not work. Apparently some time ago there was a dispute between AOL and Microsoft so AOL went and bought their own browser.
Dell computers come with AOL installed but they do not support AOL. If it was Tiscali or Wanadoo no problem.
McAfee security only works with Microsoft Internet Explorer, so the 15 months free subscription I got with my Dell is worthless because I use AOL as my ISP
i don't use aol. it was still installed on my computer but i don't have an account so i don't connect to the internet through aol. but i recently deleted it because i was trying to get rid of everything that i don't use. so would that still cause IE to act up?
The AOL browser is called Netscape or something ( can't remember the name now)
When I was on the phone to McAfee they were trying to get me to connect to the internet using IE. (I'm using Windows XP) I had to click start, then click on 'set program access and defaults' then 'custom' and where it said choose a default web browser click on 'internet explorer' and OK
Mine kept defaulting back to use my currect web browser
The other way they were trying was on the tool bar in IE - click on Tools - then programs - and tick the box that says 'Internet explorer should check that it is the default browser'
I'm no expert far from it, but there were steps they were talking me through - I didn't work for me but may work for you
that doesn't look like a solution to my problem but thanks anyway. i know i'm going to end up taking it to a repair shop. because besides the internet explorer issue, i have so many other problems so i need to get them fixed before something bad happens to my computer.
