You can go to start, run, type msconfig then click ok. Go to startup tab, in the list there should be QuickTime listed. Uncheck it, then apply. A window will appear that will warn you about selective start up. You will have to restart your computer. When computer restarts at the desktop a window will appear stating that you are using selective startup. Just check the box about not warning you again. This should stop QuickTime, or any item that you select, from loading at startup. Here is a site that will explain what I said in case I missed something.
msconfig. Hope this helps you.
Open QuickTime -> Edit -> Preferences -> QuickTime Preferences -> disable (uncheck) everything related to System Try icons, Auto Updates, Notifies, etc. -> close the windows -> close QuickTime.
Now do the MSCONFIG thing described by the previous poster.
I doubt you will be able to kill Quicktime (qttask.exe) from loading from it's own options and/or, MSCONFIG settings. It is very persistent and in my experience cannot be disabled without either (1) uninstalling the program or, (2) using a startup manager (i.e., Startup Cop) that has the ability to
actively kill startup items even those, who have the ability to re-write themselves into the registry to load on boot when disabled by MSCONFIG.
Do not use MSCONFIG in XP. It's always best to either disable to change to manual in Services. This is the effective way to stop Quicktime from loading.
If you're going to change the file name, you might as well uninstall the program. That's the ultimate solution. :)

Qttask is just the tray icon. It is an add-on so it can reside in the system tray.
I use Quicktime, (in firefox) I don't want to uninstall the whole program, just QTTASK as the tray icon. That's what you call "removing stuff I don't want"

Works for me. :)
The only difference: I use Regedit to clean Startup.

I found after removing qttask.exe, it no longer resides in my system tray. (It is not necessary)
I tried regedits, msconfig, Codestuff starter. But it kept coming back. Removing qttask is the permanent solution.
My 2 cents.
