Problem with Norton AV update scheduling
I'm using a Dell 2400 with Norton AV 2003. I have the LiveUpdate feature
turned on. And it works. However, I need to configure the LiveUpdate feature
so that it will NOT check for updates between 10pm and 9am. Is this possible? I want to do this because my computer is turned off during those hours, which messes up the LiveUpdate schedule.

So I can delete Symantec NetDetect in the Scheduled Tasks folder, and Norton AV will still check for updates every 4 hours when connected to the Internet?

Lawnmowerguy,
See if the instructions below fit your needs,
To schedule LiveUpdate using the Microsoft Scheduled Task Wizard:
Generally, you do not need to schedule LiveUpdate. If you have automatic LiveUpdate enabled, it automatically checks for updates to Norton AntiVirus every four hours by default, when your computer is connected to the Internet.
To schedule LiveUpdate, use the Microsoft Windows Scheduled Task Wizard, as described below.
1 On the Windows Start menu, click Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Scheduled Tasks.
For Windows NT 4.0, you can access the Task Scheduler in My Computer; or on the Windows Start menu, click Programs>Administrative Tools>Scheduled Tasks). The Scheduler tasks are located in C:\WINNT\TASKS.
2 In the Scheduled Tasks folder, double-click the Add Scheduled Tasks icon.
3 Follow the instructions in the Scheduled Task Wizard.
4 When you are asked to click the program you want Windows to run, select "LiveUpdate – Norton AntiVirus" from the Application list.
5 Continue following the instructions in the Scheduled Task Wizard to set the frequency and time at which you want LiveUpdate to start.
When you have successfully scheduled LiveUpdate, the LiveUpdate icon and its schedule information are listed in the Scheduled Tasks folder.

There is no need to change anything. LiveUpdate will attempt to run on the schedule you have set in Task Scheduler. If your computer is not on, the scheduled event will not occur. The next time NetDetect is scheduled to run and your computer is on, it will run. Missing a scheduled event does not delete that event. By default, NetDetect tries to run every five minutes.

I hope you're right, because Symantec NetDetect was scheduled to run at 2:30am this morning, but it couldn't because the PC was turned off. It's been turned on for 6 hours now, but it still lists 2:30am as the next scheduled task, which will never happen because my computer is always turned off by midnight. Anyway, I will wait until Symantec releases new DAT's, and if they are not automatically updated within 24 hours, I'll turn off LiveUpdate and check manually.

Yes, I've been there and studied those options, but in all candor I don't quite understand them. What I would like to do is have Symantec NetDetect stop working between the hours of 11pm and 9am.

Go to Start|Contol Panel|Scheduled Tasks. Right-click on Symantec NetDetect and choose Properties. In the dialog that opens select the Schedule tab. Click the "Advanced" button and set the parameters you wish to have used for that task.

Mine is set to check every five minutes for 24 hours. My computer is off between 11 PM and 8 AM and I have never failed to get an update when it was available. NetDetect apparently resets itself for a four-hour delay when it checks and no update is available as my last check was 1:15 this afternoon and the next scheduled is 5:15.

Thanks for the responses. The problem I keep encountering is that when NetDetect misses a scheduled task (because the computer is turned off), it stops there and doesn't move on to the next time check. However, I changed the settings again. Now, NetDetect will look for updates once an hour for 24 hours. If I ever notice NetDetect resetting itself, I'll know I've got this right.

I think this issue has been resolved after I changed the Symantec NetDetect settings to update every 15 minutes for 24 hours.
Before I turned off the computer at 11pm last night, the next scheduled check was for 2am. When I turned on the PC this morning at 7:30am, the 2am check was still there. But after waiting 10 minutes and looking again, the next scheduled check was moved up to 11:30am. So now Symantec NetDetect is re-setting itself, which it wasn't doing before. Thanks to all who gave advice.
