Need driver help

Hi all,

Just did a clean install and it seems I need two drivers. I have a Dell 15' E153FP LCD display. I downloaded the correct driver from the Dell site and unziped it to the correct folder, followed the instructions and when it says to go to display properties then the settings tab then advanced then Monitor that I should click Properties. It's grayed out. I tried the hardware wizard and it cannot find the software driver even if I point it to the driver I just unzipped. Oh yeah, I have the CD for the monitor that is supposed to have the drivers. At least that's what it says. That doesn't work either. I Explored the CD and it is just a user manual in several different languages. Right now the resulution is stuck on 640 x 480. The slider won't move. I goto device manager and there are yellow question marks next to "PCI Comunications Controller" and "Video Controller (VGA Compatable)" I check properties on both and both say The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28). What's the PCI one, the modem drivers?

I am really ticked that I don't have the display drivers. I thought I was set, after all I have the CD for this monitor. If Dell gives me a cd that says it has  drivers among other things, I expect it to have drivers.

I need help, I need to get this worked out before I start the long process of installing and updating all my apps. I've already formatted and installed Windows twice.

Thanks anyone for your help. :smileyindifferent:

No reason to be ticked at Dell, the issue is a lack of understanding on your part.

Using the Advanced Forum Search on the bottom of this page, you can quite easily find the answer to this often asked question.

The FIRST driver to be installed should be the CHIPSET driver.  Installing this will fix your issues.

Hi rickmktg,

Thanks for your reply. Yeah your right, it's probably a misunderstanding on my part.

Yes, that was the first thing I did. I had downloaded the chipset drivers prior to reinstalling and burned them on cd. After the chipset drivers I installed the ethernet card drivers then the audio drivers. That's when I first put the display cd in to get those drivers installed. But like I said, I really don't see any drivers on there. Even when I when I download the drivers I still can not  get it to work.

If you have anymore ideas, I would really appreciate it. I'm stumped. I need heeeeeeelp.

Yes, I double click them and they all say they have been installed. The display drivers just unzipped themselves to the C:\Dell\ Drivers folder. Then it gave me instructions to install them.
This is exactly how it told me to do it. But when I get to line three, the properties button on the Monitor tab is greyed out. I tried to find it on the other tabs but no luck.

Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Operating System
To manually install or update the driver, perform the following
steps:
1. Click Start-> Control Panel-> and then double-click
  Display icon.
2. In the Display Properties window, click the Settings tab, and then
  click Advanced.
3. Click the Monitor tab, and then click Properties -> Driver tab ->
  Update Driver.
4. When the Hardware Update Wizard dialog box appears, choose
“Install from a list or specific location" and then click NEXT.
5. Check the "Include this location in the search" box.
6. Type the path to the location where the driver
files were extracted (most likely "C:\Dell\Drivers\R76072") or use the browse button to select the location.
7. Click Next -> Finish to complete the installation.

I just downloaded the chipset drivers directly from the Intel site this time and will try that. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks. :smileyhappy:

I suspect you've put the drivers on our computer, but haven't installed them.  You copy the folder over to the computer, then click on the file to execute it and get a confirmation that it installed.

Hi,

Ok, I installed the chipset drivers from Intel and that fixed the display problem. I'm going to burn those drivers to cd instead of the ones I downloaded from Dell. I had all the info on what chipset I had and found a match on the Dell downloads page but it just didn't work. I know what to do now.

I just ran the modem cd and it detected a problem with the current software and It offered to fix it. I said sure, go ahead. I was just wanting to get the graphics problem out of the way first.

Thanks for your replies, I see you help out a lot on these forums. These are very good forums. I know I'm in good hands. :smileyhappy:

That's where you went wrong.  You should have gone to the Dimension 3000 page and downloaded the chipset driver from there, you don't have to lookup chipsets.

Searchme2,

The problem you are having with your display has nothing to do with your monitor. You apparently haven't installed your video adapter driver. See the instructions in the links here for instructions for installing all your drivers.

The monitor will use a default Microsoft driver installed along with Windows XP.

That's exactly what I did. I went to drivers and downloads, then I went to the Dimension 3000 page. Then under chipset the only listing was the Intel Chipset software installation utility. That's what I downloaded. However on the Intell site they have two downloads for my chipset. The installation utility, maybe the one I got from dell, and a separate driver download. It was after I installed the driver that my problems went away. Maybe that is what's missing on the Dell site.

Sorry Denny, I didn't see your reply at first. I appreciate the link. I read the related Iinks. Before I posted I had already installed the Dell system sofware. That was another one of the downloads I put on cd. At least I have everything I need now to put on my cd for the next time I do a clean install. I had to go to Intel's site to get the proper driver. So everything seems to be back to normal. Thanks again for all your help.
