multiple problems: system.log corrupted, user profile errors....

Question

Hi, i'm here for the first time.   I have problems with my Dell Inspiron 6400 with XP Home Edition. The problems started after updating some of my hardware drivers. i'm not able to login into my profiles and eventually error message: 'Windows cannot load the locally stored profile: Insufficient security rights or a corrupted local file. Windows has logged you in with a temporary profile any setting you make will not be saved.'   I've tried system restore and discovered there is no restore point at all.    soon error message: 'C:\windows\system32\config\system.log is corrupt and unreadable' appears. more and more missing system file messages start to pop up whenever i try to login.   I've tried recovery console but i'm stuck when i'm being prompted for an administrator password which i do not know.    is there anyway i can try to locate the exact problem and thus the solutions? reformatting and reinstalling my OS will only be my final resort.   thank you in advance:smileyindifferent:

Hi mombodog,

thx for ur suggestion, but apparently the system.log and user profile errors and somewhat solved after i have used recovery console and creating a new profile. however, even though i've tried XP Repair the start up is painfully slow and error messages for missing .dll and system files appear everytime.

i'm backing up my files just in case i have no choice but to reinstall the system.

I've restored my Computer´s Software to the Factory Settings instead. good news is only the partition containing the operating system is restored.
