How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting

MS article 307545, How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting, warns not to use the proceedure described in this article  if your computer has an OEM-installed operating system.

Aren't the operating systems installed by Dell, OEM?

So what can one use for a Dell Dimension 8300?

Yes, the boxes from the major suppliers are OEM. That's why MS will not give you any support when they see ( 5-OEM-7-5 ) digits in your OEM product ID. Reason from an MS support employee: We don't know what changes they made to our OS. Good enough reason for me.

John 99,

That warning does not apply to Dell systems whose OEM implementations of Windows are identical to retail versions. You can use the procedures in that document to correct the problem (and the identical procedures are also available from Dell here).

Thanks Denny for the advice and other sites.

Another question,    The MS note offers the use of Guided_help, which I would like to use.    I have copied the Guided_help file to a CD.   Now how do I get it to run on my failed computer, which does not boot up now, except with the repaird disk.

John
