Dell KB212-B USB 104 Quiet Key Keyboard, English, Windows® 8

Hi - I just purchased a new Dell OptiPlex just a week before Windows 8 came out and have upgraded to Windows 8.

I notice on the Dell product page for Dell OptiPlex 9010 that the keyboard Dell KB212-B is not compatible with Windows 8 and that a new Dell KB212-B + Windows option is available.

What is the difference?   Why is one not compatible while the other is?

Hi S.Graham.H,

Technically, the keyboard should function regardless of the operating system. The new keyboards are shipped with the new Microsoft logo for the 'Windows'   key. Please share the link where you have check the compatibility of the keyboard.

Please reply if you have any questions.

Hi NitinD,

Please reply with the exact system model no. of the computer and the keyboard.
Was Windows 8 pre-installed on the system?

You may try the following steps:

Note: Ensure that all USB devices are disconnected from the computer.

  • Press and hold the Windows key and press 'R' key. This will open the run window
  • Type 'devmgmt.msc' without the parenthesis, click on 'Ok'
  • Expand ‘Universal Serial Bus controllers’
  • From the list, look for ‘USB Root Hub’
  • Right click, choose ‘Uninstall’, choose ‘Ok’
  • Uninstall all ‘USB Root Hub’ listed
  • Wait for all the drivers to get uninstalled
  • Restarted the computer
  • Restarting the computer will install ‘USB Root Hub’s automatically on the computer

Then go to our support site and install the chipset drivers:

  • Click on the link http://dell.to/QjjZDA
  • Type the Service Tag of the computer
  • Choose the operating system
  • Click on ‘Chipset’
  • Click on ‘Download File’
  • Check on the radio box ‘Single-file download’
  • Click on ‘Continue’
  • Choose the location as desktop,
  • Click on ‘Save’, save the file on the desktop
  • Double click on the file; choose ‘Continue’
  • Click 'OK' on ‘Select the folder’ where you want to unzip the files (make a note of the folder location)
  • Click ‘Yes’
  • Click ‘Ok’, follow the on screen instructions and install the file
  • Restart the computer

In case you do not get prompts on the screen for instructions, then

  • Browse to the folder where the files were unzipped and locate the setup file
  • Double click on the file; follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation

Please reply if you have any questions.

laptop model - Inspiron 7520

Windows 8 64bit single language edition was pre installed.

Key board model - KB212-B

Followed the process stated in the post but problem persists.

While restarting the system on key board works perfectly till OS starts loading. there after keyboard does not respond. If unplugged from usb port system hangs up, forcing hardware restart.

Hi NitinD,

Thank you for the response. I would suggest you to try the keyboard and mouse on other USB ports available on the computer.

Alternatively, try to connect the keyboard and mouse on a different system and check if the issue persists.

Please reply if you have any questions.

Hi Appu,

I tried the keyboard on my brothers laptop(Dell inspiron, OS windows 7 64 bit ) it works fine. But in Windows 8 it does not.

In Device manager i tried all that was possible, like updating the driver, and the procedure that you had mentioned in the thread earlier.

Device manager says device working fine but key board does not respond. if i try to uninstall the driver when device is connected or unplug it from usb pc hangs.

i have tried all the ports on the laptop but no breakthrough.

Hi NitinD,

Thank you for the response. It might be an issue with the operating system. I would suggest you to perform a Refresh on your computer. The Refresh option is primarily a repair method. With the Refresh option, user accounts, data files and some settings are preserved on your PC without the need to create a backup or to make choices about what to keep or remove.

Here are the steps:

  1. Open the General section of PC Settings by the key combination WIN KEY + C to open charms bar and click PC Settings.

  2. Click the Get started button under Refresh your PC without affecting your files.

  3. Click the Next button at the Refresh your PC step of the wizard.

  4. You may be prompted to insert installation or recovery media if there is not a recovery image preconfigured on your PC.

  5. Click the Refresh button at the Ready to refresh your PC step.

  6. At this point, the PC is restarted, and the refresh actions are completed.

Once Refresh is complete, please install Dell Quickset again.
Hope this helps. Please reply if you have any questions.

Hi NitinD,

Thank you for the response. New system are not shipped with recovery discs. Since, the system is able to boot into Windows, You can create Recovery Media using Dell Backup and Recovery application using which you can later use to restore the computer to factory defaults. You may refer to the Video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=vIglSB9ZB_U

Alternatively, you can perform PC Restore using the following steps if the system is booting to Windows.
Note: This step leads to complete data loss including pictures, music files, videos, documents and applications. Please disconnect any external peripherals as well.

  • Open Dell Backup and Recovery
  • Plug in the AC Adapter
  • Click the Recovery tile
  • Click System Recovery
  • Click Yes, Continue
  • Select the Factory Image, then click Restart
  • The system would prompt the user to ensure that they are selecting the correct backup point. Click Yes once verified
  • The system restarts and goes ahead with restoring the factory image as per the recovery point selected. Follow the on-screen instructions to setup the Operating System

Hope this helps.

Hi Dan,

If you are talking about characters like ¦ or €, then it is usually the 'Alt Gr' button.

Hi Appu,

Thanks for your reply. I am having a hard time getting the third character/symbol on some of the keys. Can you tell me how to switch between these characters?

Thanks,

Dan
