Can't Rename File or Folder in My Documents

Until recently, no problems.  Now I cannot rename any file or folder in My Documents, My Pictures, My Music.  No rename option appears in the drop down when I right click, and cannot rename with a mouse click on file name or using the F2 Key. Rename option does not appear in the file and folder tasks menu. In the file drop down menu the rename feature is inactive. If I right click on the document or folder properties, in the general tab the file, folder name is protected/inactive.

I am able to rename files and folders that are on my Desktop and if I move or copy files and folders from My Documents to the desktop, I can then rename.  I have run a virus scan--none.  Also, if I log onto other users on the desktop computer, the problem does not exist in their environment. I have a Dell Dimension 4700, XP Professional SP2.

I have checked Microsoft KB for a solution to no avail.  Any solutions would be appreciated.

the My documents folder might be on "READ ONLY". Right click the My Documents folder -> Properties -> Uncheck "Read only".

Try that.

SitelTech:

Thanks for the suggestion.  I had tried that but to no avail.  Many folders show a read only attribute even if only one read only document id in the folder.  Any other thoughts?

Not come accross this problem before, so don't know if this would solve. Have you checked the permissions on the security tab of your my documents folder? Make sure you have full control.
