Cannot delete files - error 0x80070570

One day I just couldn't delete or move most files off of my computer. At first I thought it was just files on my desktop, but I found out tonight its also files in my documents folder. And its not all files, just some....

I get this message:

An unexpected error is preventing the operation. Make a note of this error code, which might be useful if you get additional help to resolve this problem:

Error 0x80070570: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable

I tried searching through many forums and this error code is also associated with some kind of DVD error or backup error...none of which applies to me. I simply want to put a word document, powerpoint document, JPEG into the trash.

In the replies to the DVD error or backup error people were talking about ownership blah blah blah....if the solution to this problem also requires some kind of ownership deal....would you mind explaining things step by step? I have no idea what that means.

Thanks!

Thanks, its taken me forever to attemp to run chkdsk - the autocheck was corrupt. I finally figured out how to replace the autocheck yesterday and it ran! Yay....now chkdsk is stalling at stage 5 (verifyng file space) at 73%.  :smileysad:

At least now I can delete SOME of the files I couldn't. So frusrating...I just got this computer 2 months ago!

Anyone else has ideas on how to make chkdsk run all the way through and if it does if it will even help?

Thanks again!

Just an update for those of you who may have experienced the same thing:

After 3 days on the phone with dell, someone finally had me do a custom diagnostic on the HD (Hitting F12 from the boot screen to do a diagnostic) which found 2 errors at about the same point the CHKDSK was stalling at.

I spoke to a Dell Rep and they have dispatched me a new hard drive
