application layer gateway service problem

I have a Dimension 4600 and use McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.1. Recently, I have been getting messages after I start the computer that Application Layer Gateway Service is encountering errors and must close. I believe this error is the reason why I cannot update my virus protection or Adaware. Does anyone know how to correct this? Thanks, William Hahn

The message says:
Application Layer Gateway Service has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.
Please tell Microsoft about this problem.
We have created an error report that you can send to help us improve Application Layer Gateway Service. We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous.
To see what data this error report contains, click here.
two buttons-send error report and don't send.
 
Any ideas?

When you get that error message, click on the click here to view the error report.  Then write and report here the AppName and ModName involved in the error.

Error signature
szAppName : alg.exe   szAppVer : 5.1.2600.3280  szModName: ntdll.dll
szModVer: 5.1.2600.3280  offset: 0002d9cb
 
Reporting details
This error report includes: information regarding the condition sof Application Layer Gateway Service when the problem occurred, the operation sustem version and computer hardware in use, and the Internet Protocol (IP) address of your computer.
 
Then the message goes on about personal info and my identity, I don't think that it is important in trying to fix the problem. blah, blah, blah. . . .
