AOL 9.0 and Windows Update problems
Last week I experienced problems with IE6 and called AOL tech support and was told Internet files were corrupted. I was told to call Dell Support and obtain newest version of Internet Explorer which did not make sense to me since I had IE6. I tried the repair option which did not help. I also could not do Windows Updates. It would hang at 0% and then IE would freeze up. I tried Microsoft troubleshooting links on Update page and followed directions which did not help. I could not ever "Publish" changes to websites using FrontPage 2002. I would never get dialog box to enter user-id and password.
Monday I had installed AOL 9.0. I did restore back to before the AOL 9.0 and uninstalled the AOL software. I found CD with AOL 7.0 installed it and I had no problems with Windows Updates. I have had no problems with Internet Explorer and FrontPage 2002.
I tried to install the AOL 9.0 again. The problems reoccurred. Again I did restore to before installation of AOL 9.0 and problems cleared up.
There are definitely problems with AOL 9.0 for me!

ALgal,
Thanks for using the Dell Community Forum.
Getting Internet Explorer to work with AOL is tricky at best. AOL has its own web browser that they would like their customers to use. Usually, most AOL customers don't use IE or Outlook at all.
I'll keep this here and let's see if anybody does have a solution for you.

Algal,
You seem to be the exception, most people who have installed aol9 with windows me,have received a iphlpapi.dll error message,if your not ,than all the better.
I spent 2 hours on the phone with aol tech support, and got nowhere fast, trying to get an answer for a friend who had the exact same problem you have.Odd though, that when you uninstalled aol9 ,your problem went away.Maybe ,one of the more experienced members will jump in here and offer a solution.
Hope your new disc works,
Mike

I'll let you know. It may take about 10 days to receive the CD. Maybe I will make it to Blockblusters before then and get one.

I got AOL 9.0 CD from Blockbusters. I installed it and problems with Windows Updates and "Publish" with FrontPage 2002 seemed to disappear. However, minor problem with IE6 still occurs. With the IE6 menu bar, I could not click File, Edit, View, Tools, Help without obtaining hour glass by the cursor. This did not occur with the Favorites.
You cannot just uninstall AOL 9.0 to get rid of problem. You must do restore back to before the installation of AOL 9.0. If you do not have restore points back that far, I do not know what you do.

I beg to differ with Dell-Michael. AOL 9.0 has an "internal" browser, but it's still IE 6.
With respect to uninstalling AOL, it's really no worse than other applications, but a system restore to prior to the installation is always best. In addition, I think it helps to clear out all your adapters and do a rebuild of the TCP/IP stack. I've used this technique to cure many AOL-induced headaches.
I should add that I have AOL on my own system, but have not "upgraded" to 9.0.

Dell 4100( 21/2 years old) 1GH, 20HD, 256 RAM, AO9, WINDOWS ME.
I have IE V 6 since it first came out, I have not had any problems getting Windows Update to work. Every time I go to it click on Windows Update it load 33%, 66% anf then 100%. I have updated all security fixes escept Direct 9.0b. It gives me a problem evertime so I have just skipped it. PS I deleted all my previous v of AOl and downlaod 9.0 from disc sent by AOL Everything works ok

What do you mean about the 9.0B? You have had no problems with IE6 then. I appreciate the info. I talked to AOL technician about problem again today. We deleted versions of AOL on computer and I installed the AOL 9.0 again. The very first time I sign on AOL 9.0, IE6 is fine. However when I sign off AOL 9.0, the UTF files are installed. According to the support technician, the UTF files should have no affect on Internet Explorer. He said that this will have to be written up as bug and nothing else can be done. He did ask me if Dell support knew of something.
I am not really upset but puzzled. Must be one of those software conflict things.

Thanks! My problem is not with Windows Updates anymore. Windows Updates worked with the second CD that I obtained from Blockbusters. My problem is that when I install the AOL 9.0 and sign-off, the UTF files are installed. After that I cannot click IE6 menu options (except Favorites) without getting hour glass by arrow curor. This happens whether connected to Internet with AOL 9.0 or not. AOL tech support says that UTF files should not affect Internet Explorer at all. Puzzling!

Good job identifying this problem. You're the type of person that let's AOL know when things aren't working right. I'm not sure what you mean by UTF files. Did the AOL tech tell you?
I'm still running 8.0 plus, and might avoid 9.0 for this reason. I personally don't use it, my wife and daughter do.

Problem is solved and I am embarrassed at easy solution. Evidently the problems with Windows Update, publishing web pages was due to bad CD. Second CD I obtained from Blockbusters was okay only I could not use IE without getting hour glass by pointer with menu options except Favorites. I mentioned this to one AOL tech support I know and was told I had corrupted IE files and went through IE6 repair option. It must have been with first CD problems. Found out all I had to do was go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Internet Options, Connections, and select "Never dial a Connection". AOL 9.0 from 2nd CD seems to be fine.
Got egg on my face!
