Altiris Local recovery solution problem -Can't use second drive for snapshot partition.

Downloadedand installed the Dell Altiris local recovery solution on a Dell Optiplex GX620 equipped with 2 SATAII 160 Gb drives.

The software will not allow me to create the recovery partition on the second drive. It insists on splitting my C drive in half and creating it there.

From reading the documents on Local recovery, it is very vague about this.  It seems self defeating to NOT be able to place the recovery on a seperate harddrive and taking advantage of hardware redundacy for your recovery / backup snapshots.  After all, if your main drive crashes, how do access the recovery partiton that is stored on the other half of the  main drive.

Is this the way the software is supposed to act?  Dell Moderators, comments, help?

I might note that I just bought 10 GX 620 configured this way.   I had talked our new faculy members out of  buying Imac's for their research lab's , and the main selling point I used was the onbaord  data protection using - free recovery / backup software included with the Dell's coupled with onboard  redundant drives.

" ... onboard redundant drives."

Was a poor choice of words.  It is not a raid array. I do not beleive the GX620 is capable of hardware raid arrays

" ... onboard redundant drives."

refers to the fact a second identical SATA II drive is installed. The purpose  to act as the backup device / snapshot partiton for Altiris Local recovery so if the primary drive fails, the data would be recoverable on the redundant (second ) drive.

Sorry for the confusion.

" ... onboard redundant drives."

If a RAID configuration defines drive 2 = drive 1, then the second drive is not an independant entity, it is simply a shadow or mirror of the first drive. Any attempt to differentiate the drives should be thwarted by design. Additional images may be saved in other locations.

If the drives are configured as RAID 1. there is no need for data protection backup, since one drive is the mirror of the other.

The "Dell Altiris local recovery solution" is not familiar to me. Most imaging software is very accomodating to saving an image of one drive or partition to another, or to many other locations. Perhaps the definition implied by the phrase "local recovery solution" means local to the drive, preventing the image from being saved even to a second internal drive on the same system?

P.S. - The documentation for Altiris 6 Local Recovery Pro implies my suspicion is correct. "... snapshots ... are stored to a protected area on the local hard drive for complete and continual backup and recovery protection."

"Recovery Solution For Total Protection"
"Upgrade to Recovery Solution from Local Recovery Pro for complete ...
... and recovery protection for hard drive failure and lost or stolen systems. ..."
