Adding memory from a gateway machine with XP to a dell pentium III Optiplex

I am wondering if i can remove a memory card from my Gateway compouter ( I have no instructions for that machine) and place it into my Dell pentium III optiplex.as long as I keep the total memory dow to the 356 maximum. If I try it and the board doesnt fit, I know i can't use it. If it does fit, could I do any harm to my Dell machine?

Kurshan,

Need specific Gateway model to tell you if the Gateway chips will work in the Optiplex (GX1p?).  Certain Gateway models, notably the GP6-400 Pentium II motherboards, used memory chips that were not tolerated well by certain Dell Pentium III motherboards.

Kurshan,
Never got your Optiplex Model.  Specifications for GX1(p) memory are:

168 pin 32-, 64-, and 128-MB non-ECC SDRAM ("PC100" 100 MHz) =Total RAM 384
168 pin 32-, 64-, 128-, and 256-MB ECC SDRAM ("PC100" 100 MHz)=Tota RAM 768

Gateway E4200 used 32-, 64-, and 128-Mb SDRAMS in 168-pin slots for a total of 384Mb ram. If you have these two machines the DIMMs are interchangeable only for the 32-, 64-, and 128-Mb DIMMS.
The 256Mb Dimms will not work in the Gateway.

Hope this info helps.
