Any VXRail users ?

Hi All,

I am trying to understand the VXRAIL advantages and disadvantages. If anyone using VXRAIL in your environment please give your feedback.

I have done projects with UCS/VPLEX/VNX Array & UCS/VNX. It will be great if you can help me to compare with these products. Also we can use this thread moving to get as many helpful answers.

Thanks,

Jaffer

Jaffer:

I'd suggest starting with the VxRail Tech Book for a detailed overview of the product.

Hi All,

I will try to be specific.

I would like to know these features will work in VXRAIL and how?

1. Dedupe and Compression ? If yes What is the Dedupe & Compression Ratio?

2. What is the dedupe method?

3. How the resources (CPU & Memory) used for dedupe & compression ?

4. If I buy an appliance with 4 nodes of each having 256GB RAM, what would be my usable RAM ? Also if you have any calculation on CPU (Just wanna to understand the resource allocation by VXRAIL for its internal processes)?

Help me to understand the above, I will shoot my remaining questions.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Jaffer

Jaffer-

You seem unfamiliar maybe with the vSAN technology that underpins the VxRAIL solution. In specific response to your questions about the data reduction capabilities, I would recommend the Vmware white paper on Space Efficiency Technologies for vSAN 6.2.

https://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/products/vsan/vmware-vsan-62-space-efficiency-technologies.pdf

A detailed background on designing systems based on vSAN 6.2, including VxRAIL can be obtained from the vSAN Design and Sizing Guide.

Hi Jayseaman,

Thanks for your reply. Now I wonder

What is the RAID group in each disk group ?

Thanks,

Jaffer

Jaffer-

There is no RAID at the Disk Group level within each VxRAIL appliance. Please see the Virtual San chapter of the TECHBOOK referenced in Colin's post above starting at page 42. The Disk Group is simply Just a Bunch of Disks providing storage behind a single cache device (sold state drive). In the specific case of VxRAIL, a Disk Group is 1-5 capacity drives and exactly 1 cache drive.

Data protection is provided within vSAN not by RAID but rather by storage object replicas. The Storage Policy determines where and how many replicas should be created.

Hi All,

I have a question regarding the Erasure coding. I read somewhere that erasure coding is CPU intensive. Do you have any report on the resource utilisation of Erasure coding ?

Cheers,

Jaffer

I would suggest reading this for info on Erasure Coding then refer you to this VMware Blog on Erasure Coding in VSAN 6.2
