Adding RAM to VxRail Nodes

Anyone added RAM to their existing VxRail nodes (PowerEdge) after initial purchase?

Thanks!

Any components used in a VxRail Appliance should be purchased from Dell EMC or through a certified Business Partner. Going through non-approved channels for component upgrades may void warranty and maintenance.

Hi,

While I have never done this personally, this is fully supported for the PowerEdge based models. The procedure is simple and straightforward. What are your concerns ?

Regards,

Hi folks, thanks.

I was more interested in whether or not Dell/EMC expects customers to purchase RAM from Dell/EMC for VxRail nodes.

I have a 3 node cluster. Can I do one node at a time when adding Memory? Or do I need to power down all three and do all of them then power back up all 3 nodes?

Hi,

For the VXrail with Quanta chases-  ND 20C2.2GHZ 2XE5-2630V4 256GB SFP AF -  the memory is upgradable?  Existing memory is 256GB, need to upgrade to 512GB. Does EMC do the replacement since it's Quanta?

I am doing the exact same thing this weekend. Did you need to power them all down, or did one at a time work?

Please update this thread. I can't find any procedures for adding additional memory to our VxRail cluster. I would hope that the procedure would be to upgrade one node at a time.

Yes, I have. The quote to purchase RAM directly from Dell was too expensive. I purchased Dell certified RAM from a 3rd party vendor and installed it with no issues, about four months ago. No one has questioned it. I saved about 40%.

I just joined this community and can't believe how lame it is that simple questions like this are unanswered for months. Well, for what it is worth, and I am NOT any certified expert, but yes one node at a time. I recently added RAM to ours. Go through the usual procedures to put each host in maintenance mode and shut it down via vSphere, power off the machine. Add RAM as you would to any PowerEdge server, following the guidelines in documentation for your model. Power it back up, watch the console to make sure the RAM is recognized and no errors, enter vSphere to bring it out of maintenance. On to the next node.

I would like to also verify that you can add RAM, one node at a time. Just put the node in maintenance mode, allow all the VMs to migrate off, then shut it down to add the RAM. Also to note, if you have the VxRail E560 models, the firmware does not allow mixed capacities of RAM per node. So if you have 32GB modules you cannot add 64GB modules. Despite the E560 being based on a PowerEdge server chassis the VxRail firmware is custom and doesn't allow it.
