Does that mean it could be gen 2 even if the processor is an i7 12700.

If you are interest in the Vostro 3910 for its M.2 storage performance, you may look for another model.  The M.2 will perform at Gen 3 but with only 2 data lane.  That is translate to 16 Gbps or a real life of 1700 MB/s max speed.  A storage specification is included for reference.

That is a better choice.  The OptiPlex 5000 has an overall performance over the Vostro.
