VNXe3200 - Hot Sparing Technology

Hey guys,

we sell a VNXe3200 to customer.

The configuration of this system:

VNXe3200

DA-iSCSI 10Gbit

25x600GB (Performancetier)

9x2TB NL-SAS (Capacitytier)

3x100GB SSD (FastCache)

Problem is:

We planned with 5xRaid5 (4+1), 1xRaid6 (6+2+1HS), 1xRaid1 (FastCache +1HS), but the System reserve on initialization one HotSpare to the Perfromancetier .

Therefore we are missing 2,1TB (1xRaid5 4+1 Pool) Performancecapacity. We also planned the performancearea without HotSpare.

I found this article in EMC Manual.

Does it means, when I change the NL-SAS Spare to Performance Spare, that all correct works and the customer get there missing 2,1TB Performancecapcity?

Yeah, It's obvious to me, that the NL-SAS Tier have no HotSpares.

We want to avoid a new shelf for sale.

Best regards,

Martin

Hi Martin,

Spares are required, and pre-allocated automatically unless the array has a specific minimum configuration;

1. RAID-5: System with Just 6 drives, configured as RAID-5 (4+1) and 1 Hot Spare Candidate

2. RAID-6: System with Just 8 drives, configured as RAID-6 (6+2) and 0 Hot Spare Candidate

3. RAID-1/0 (Manual mode only): System with Just 6 drives, configured as RAID-1/0 (3+3) and 0 Hot Spare Candidates

Your configuration exceeds this, so you are required to have a spare for the Performance tier.

Also, you cannot use a NL-SAS drive as a spare for SAS drives, spares must be from the same architecture.

Since you have a 25 slot DPE and a 15 slot 3.5" DAE, you should be able to add a SAS spare tot eh DAE and not have to buy another shelf.

Both DAEs are full....

Sorry, you're quite correct.

That's an option, sure.  ..and your RAID 6 pool will be fine as it is the specified minimum config to avoid having a mandatory spare.

Yeah, thats right.. Spares must be from same architecture.

My Idea: change the NL-SAS to SAS Drive.

Okay..

That means, that this option works? You'll now this?

Sorry for my question, but the customer is a little bit angry about this problems, and I would like to present him a certain solution for this problem.

Hi Martin!

you have two Options:

first option:

Creating 2 Pools (and using the first 4 drives for not performance related tasks or not using the first 4 drive)

1. pool for the first 4 drives

2. pool with the rest of drives

mix-pool.gif

second option:

or you can create a pool with different raidlevels for the sas drives in the pool...

You get a warning for the first 4 system drives, but you can put it also in the pool... (it works, because i created it in the past)

Regards,

Gregor
