Trouble adding a DAE to a VNX

We have a VNX5300 with 25-drives. We bought an expansion DAE, also 25-drives.

Having trouble with 2 items:

1) Not sure how to set the shelf ID, where is the button located to change the ID?

2) SAS cables don't line up as expected from diagrams I see on the web. Due to the "key" on the sas cable, im forced to use the "outside" pair of SAS ports on the expansion DAE rather than the "inside" ports.

I referenced the following URL:

https://d1a5jlm8ox96xj.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/VNX-5100-5300-5500-SAS-and-Power1.pdf?x15986

They show the (highlighted in blue) SAS cable going from the SP to the "inside" ports, but the key on the SAS cable doesn't allow this, it only fits in the "outside" port on the expansion DAE, which is shown going to another DAE in the diagram  (not shown).

Can someone clarify this please?

Hi,

1) You can't set the shelf ID it's generated automatically based on where you do the expansion.

2) Your first 25 disks are in the Bus 0 Enclosue 0. Since you have two Busses it's better to put the new ones in the Bus 1. To do so you should plug SAS cable in SPB port 1 and in SPB port circle, after that you do the same to port A. If the Key in the SAS doesn't allow this you should plug it in the other way (SPB then DAE or DAE then SPB). But keep in mind that this should be in the circle port not the Diamond.
I would also advise using Unisphere Server Mangement

1) There is no button to set shelf-ID. When you connect it to the SAS bus, the VNX will assign the the Bus and Enclosure ID.

2) Never mind the inside/outside ports. The SAS Cabling for VNX is always from Diamond to Circle. So the ports on the DPE (SP) both have two Diamonds on the port. You plug the Diamond-marked end of the SAS cable in here (e.g. on Port 1 of SP-B). Then you plug the other end of the cable (marked with a circle) to the port on the DAE with two circles on LCC-B. Then repeat for SP-A to LCC-A. That picture you have is from a 15-Disk DAE. I think the 25-Disk DAE have the ports the other way around. I'm not sure. Use the same SAS port on each SP (i.e. Port 1 on both SPs or Port 0 on both SPs).

The hardware information guide has more details on Page 88, I believe (VNX DAE Cabling)

Also, if you download Unisphere Service Manager you can use the Add Disk Array Enclosure Wizard to add the DAE, it gives you a step-by-step guide and tells you when and where to plug cables. (From the System screen, select Hardware > Hardware Installation > Install Disk Array Enclosure)
