W32.Protoride.Worm

After running a virus detection scan from http://security.symantec.com, I learned my computer is infected with the W32.Protoride.Worm. It is affecting several of the icons in the control panel and the media player does not work.

This is my first virus/worm/problem. Although I have not updated my Norton Anti-Virus in several months, I am not sure if it would have caught this one. What is unusual now is that my computer cannot even cannot even get into Symantec's website.

Any help you can give me in getting rid of this worm would be appreciated. Results of the Hijackthis scan follows. Thanks in advance.

Ray

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.protoride.worm.html

c:\documents and settings\all users\start menu\programs\startup\msupdate.exe

click start>run msconfig  click the startup tab click disable all then restart and then

download and run vexira

http://www.centralcommand.com/downloads.html

click on try next to

Vexira Antivirus for Microsoft Windows 95/98/Me

or

Vexira Antivirus for Microsoft Windows NT/2000/XP Workstations

according to the type of Operating system you have

keeps clicking next/ok and install it will say the licence file cannot

be copied click ok and continue (The only reason i suggest vexira is its small and powerful and have one of the highest rating on the anti virus comparison charts you could also try nod32 www.nod32.com)

Please post back with a fresh hijackthis log after you have done that - after a reboot please.

Thanks for the information. I was able to fix the registry setting, however I still have the worm. I downloaded the recommended vexira antivirus, but it did not find it. I tried to go to symantec website that Navin kurian posted above, but I am somehow blocked from this any and any other symantec site. This prevents me from getting the live updates.

Any suggestions? here is a current hijack.

You've got an unpatched machine and the Gaobot worm on the loose.

See here for details on how to clean it.

Kurian and Texruss,

Thanks for your help. It turns out I had two worms: Gaobot and Protoride.

They caused problems with control panel icons and accessing some websites, including Symantec which had the fix for Protoride. http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.protoride.worm.html  In case someone else needs Symnatec's fix, I will paste their instructions in a separate post.

Texruss, you were right. I had not installed any Microsoft patches in a long time. I have learned my lesson. I also got some information to help from the following post: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=si_virus&message.id=10139&highlight=protoride#M10139 I installed some spyware finding software. It found something that was deleted. Then I was able to get the Symantec site, update the signature files with Live Update. After fixing the registry setting using regedit.com (not exe) and disabling system restore, I scanned the entire system and found Protoride and Gaobot.

I think I still have a problem because I cannot enable the Auto-Protect on my Norton Internet Security Software, nor can I put a check in box to use the firewall on Windows XP (it is grayed out).

Attached is the current HJT Log. Maybe you can still see a problem.

Thanks for everything..  Ray

Then reboot to safe mode and delete this file

File > > scvhost.exe (I think you have already done so)

Then reboot and post a fresh hijackthis log for us to check.

ChrisRLG... Thanks for your help. I followed your instructions and removed some items using hijackthis. I also rebooted into the safe mode to delete scvhost.exe. I did a full computer search, but it could not find it. However, I think it is still there because there is a ZoneAlarm alert that says scvhost would like to send information out to the Internet.

I will paste the current HJT log for your review. I will also attach a text file that I found in a log that Norton has in its folder. It shows several files are infected with either gaobot or protoride.

What is strange is that a full computer scans by Norton AV or Vexira Anti-Virus does not find anything.

My computer seems to be getting worse as I cannot get to any website. Please help...

Thanks. Ray

Hang in there...they are not ghosts although they seem like it.
Just hostile files that can be deleted. Make sure you enable Hidden Files option.

Boot in Safe Mode again and enable Hidden Files option:

How to Show hidden files.

Open Windows Explorer: type the word explorer at Start/Run box and click OK:

Drill on down and delete the following files and folder:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\scvhost.exe

C:\juvdxghl.exe

C:\ixorvnqv.exe

C:\mxacllkp.exe

C:\Documents and Settings\Ray Loesch\My Documents\Ray's Folder\systemw.exe

C:\WINDOWS\pss  folder

As soon as possible after the final all clear is given by us you should flush your Restore Points for XP. That means disabling the Restore Point, rebooting to flush it, then re-enabling a new Restore Point. The reason why we need to do this is to purge the bad files hidden in System restore which can't be cleaned by your antivirus programs.

All the best,

Texruss

Texruss,

Thanks for your confidence building post. Our computer seems to be working fine, except it is a little sluggish. It probably needs defrag.

At any rate, I changed the view settings to see hidden files, then drilled into Windows Explorer. I could not find any of the files you mentioned, however I did find and delete the pss folder.

Here is the latest HijackThis Log. Let me know if you see anything that needs attention.

Thanks again to you and everyone else who helped me out of this jam.

Ray

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are (or seem to be - please advise of any problems):-
------------------------
How on earth did I get infected with all that spyware in the first place? http://www.net-integration.net/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?;act=ST;f=38;t=3051
Also available from here :- http://www.computercops.biz/postlite7736-.html or http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957
--------------
Look at the info on my website regarding malware (Link below). Some things you can do to stop getting infected again:-

Spybot S&D, Ad-aware Run weekly - or after a heavy internet session.
Spybot S&D v1.3 also have a run time module that runs in the background.

Spywareblaster & Spywareguard, first sets kill bits to stop known bad activeX controls installing, second acts like your AV to stop browser hijacks and installing of known badies.

Also ie-spyad (Link on my site), puts 4000 bad sites in your restricted (banned) sites list, to stop you accidentaly getting sent to a bad site, it has optional list of "bad" adult sites to install as well.

All those with links from my site. Do remember just like Anti-Virus they need to be updated regularly, I do mine weekly, Anti-Virus hourly.

Another good program winpatrol from here.

With these and a firewall in place I have to try various bad sites when checking peoples hijackthis logs looking to sort bad from good, and I have not yet been infected. Still time for it to happen LOL.
