Inspiron 17R 5721 : Getting Rid of McAfee

In past years I have learned to avoid "bulky" security programs" like Norton and McAfee.  So, naturally, I deleted it using "Your Uninstaller!".  That seemed to go OK; it wasn't until later that I realized that there was still a lot of associated programs and files remaining.  After my new computer started running slower and slower, I decided to try a Windows 8 Refresh.  It studied my computer for some time and advised me before proceeding that a number of files and drivers will be missing and I will need files or disks with the information.

Is there some way to get the missing software, since nothing actually comes with the computer???

The problem is fixed at the moment.  However when McAfee time runs out, I will want to remove it.  At that time, I may end up doing pretty much what didn't work before - including running McAfee's KILL program.  That is what I did last time - except I had installed another security program - believing that McAfee had been completely removed.  That combination slowed things down to a crawl.

Next time I'll complete all levels of Mcafee removal - and disconnect from Internet while doing so.

Hopefully ...... :emotion-42:

The answers to my predicament gave me a useful assist to solving my problem.

I turned back the clock on my computer to day zero - which loaded McAfee, of course.  When its time runs out, I'll try to destroy it again.  It would be nice if they gave me the choice of buying it or helping me delete it.

Hi carborundum,

Your post must have been moved after I checked this forum. Considering that Defender (anti-virus/anti-spyware) is part of Windows 8 and considering your desire to remove McAfee, I would go ahead and remove McAfee now, at which point Windows 8's Defender will activate.

* Open the McAfee Control Center, and DISABLE  all of McAfee’s components that you see enabled and running.
* Next, via the Control Panel, locate the section to uninstall programs, and use this to UNinstall McAfee. Reboot.
* You may want to follow that by running McAfee’s Removal Tool to remove any remnants. It is available here:
http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

* Reboot your system.
* Check to see that Defender is now running as your anti-virus.  Windows Defender on Win 8 is a full FREE anti-VIRUS product.

I guess I'm the oddball here, though many others has also claimed McAfee to be "heavy", it only taxes my CPU by 30% max during Full security scans & RAM even less. My Dell XPS 8700 shipped with 1 year of McAfee Internet Security, so I decided to give it a chance and am glad that I did, as McAfee has several useful tools in the suite.

However I realize that not every user will have the same experience as I did & not everyone will be as satisfied.

Make sure you manually stop all of McAfee's running components before you uninstall it.

including running McAfee's KILL program
Do you mean the McAfee Removal Tool? It doesn't really kill anything. It simply removes any leftover files and/or remnants in the registry. Yes, if you install another anti-virus without completely removing one, you will have problems.
