Dohbar

I got McFee with Aol... But I decided to upgrade to Norton Internet Security 2005.  I started having problems and was advised to delete McFee as Norton/McFee were incompatible.

Messenger Plus...  I think it was loaded when I got an upgrade of instant messenger?

Does this help?

Hey Ian Mac...

Looking at your log right now...Couple questions and a comment.

1. Are you still running the McAffee Firewall...as the service is still running => O23 - Service: McAfee Personal Firewall Service (MpfService) - Unknown owner - (no file).  If so then you should stop as you are also running NIS from Symantec.  I believe that the McAffee Firewall came with Dell PC's.  Do not use HJT to fix this as there is a specific method to remove it.  Just advise if you want it removed and I will add it to my "FIX" for you.

2. Did you install MessengerPlus at all?

Now for my comment...Please be careful using HJT to fix 010 entries => http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=42#O10Diag

Can you please reply back asap.

Thanks,

OK...

I see we posted at the same time.  No do not uninstall at this time I'm writing up a fix for you.  MessengerPlus! 3 is just an add-on and not part of Microsoft so it will not affect the MS Messenger.

Do some googling on MessengerPlus! 3 and you will see some issues if installed with the "Sponsored" option

Thanks,

Dobhar

Messenger 3 Plus is in the Control Panel as a program I could uninstall.  I have not tried uninstalling until you advise me.  Will this destroy functions of Instant Messenger 6.2?

I do want to kill off mcFee, as I think the Symantech (norton) product should be enough protection.

Hi Ian...

Was MessengerPlus! (By the way it is not part of Microsoft and is an add on) installed with the "Sponsored" option.  If so you may have installed some "Malware".  If it was installed without the "Sponsored" option then you are OK.

If you don't know then go to your Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel and advise only if the program is listed.  Should be listed as "MessengerPlus! 3"

Do not unistall at this time just post back.

Thanks,

Hi Ian...

 Please print out or copy these instructions\tutorials to Notepad as the internet will be unavailble to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Step 1.
==========
Remove installed programs using Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel:
- Get into Control Panel then "Add or Remove Programs"
- Look in the Currently installed programs box for each program listed below and if it is there:
- Click Change (or Change/Remove) button.
- If you are prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes

MessengerPlus! 3

Step 2.
==========

Let's get rid of the McAfee Antispyware service...
- Click "Start" button then select "Run"
-  Type "services.msc" (without quotes) then hit OK
- Scroll down and find the service called.

McAfee Personal Firewall Service

- Right-click on the service and choose "Properties"
- On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service
- Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled"
- Click Apply then OK. Exit the Services utility
(Note: If the service isn't listed go skip Step 3 and go on to Step 4 but advise me that service was not there)

Step 3.
==========

Let's delete that service
- Start HijackThis
- Click "Config" button
- Click "Misc Tools" button
- click "Delete an NT Service" button
- Copy and Paste the bold test below in the "Delete an NT Service" window

MpfService

- Click "OK"
- Close HijackThis

Step 4.
==========
Reboot computer into "Safe Mode" Using the F8 method...
- Restart the computer
- As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Boot Menu appears
- Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item
- Press the Enter key

Step 5.
==========

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing...
- Open "My Computer"
- Click on "Tools" and from the drop down menu select "Folder Options"
- Select the "View" tab
- Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading SELECT "Show hidden files and folders"
- UNCHECK the "Hide file extensions for known types option"
- UNCHECK the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option"
- Click "Yes" to confirm
- Click "OK"

Step 6.
==========
- Close all Windows and Programs
- Start HijackThis...
- Select\check the following entries, Double-check to make sure that only these entries are checked.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: MsgPlusLoader.dll
O23 - Service: McAfee Personal Firewall Service (MpfService) - Unknown owner - (no file)

- Click the "Fix checked" button.

Question...Is this your DNS?
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{061F5169-DE48-492C-B4D6-DF25610B35E2}: NameServer = 205.188.146.145
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\{061F5169-DE48-492C-B4D6-DF25610B35E2}: NameServer = 205.188.146.145

Step 7.
==========
Delete the following file(s) and folder(s) in BOLD only. (Don't be concern if they do not exist but advise what files could not be found)
C:\Program Files\MessengerPlus! 3 <<<= Delete This Folder

Step 8.
==========
We now need to cleanup all the Temp files and such
- Click the "Start" button, then select "Run"
- Enter cleanmgr in the "Run" menu to start XP's "Disk Cleanup" tool
- Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are selected then click OK
- When done close "Disk Cleanup"

- Browse to C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Delete All files within the Prefetch folder <= Not the Prefetch folder itself

Step 9.
==========
- Reboot your computer back into "Normal Mode"

Step 10.
==========
Run HouseCall from Trend Micro from http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
- Click "Scan now, it's free" (Note: It will take few minutes to download, so be patient)
- Select all available drives
- Check(tick) "Auto Clean"
- Click "Scan"
- After scan completes, copy the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted and post them when your done with the following fix

Step 11.
==========
- Download, install, setup, and run Ad-aware SE 1.06 and Spybot S&D 1.4 per the instructions found at http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=13
(Note: If you already have Ad-aware and Spybot make sure they are updated to the latest versions, setup per instructions in link, and re-run)

Step 12.
==========
- Make sure PC has been rebooted after Ad-aware and Spybot scans
- Post back a new fresh HijackThis log

Hi Ian...

What was the Trend Micro results...

Your HJT logs looks quite clean.  I'm going to get you to run a couple scans to see if any hidden nasties...

Step 1.
==========
- Create a folder called Antispyware on your C: Drive
- Download the following tools but do not run these programs yet
1. Download Silent Runners from http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip. Extract\Unzip it into its own folder in C:\Antispyware. Call it silentrunners
2. Download RKFiles from http://skads.org/special/rkfiles.zip. Extract\Unzip it into its own folder in C:\Antispyware. Call it rkfiles

Step 2.
==========
- Reboot computer into " Safe Mode" as these programs have to be run in Safe Mode

Step 3.
==========
- Browse to C:\Antispware\silentrunners folder
- Double-click the SilentRunners.vbs to start it (Note: If your antivirus complains, tell it to allow this script)
- Copy and paste the contents of the Silent Runners log in your next reply

Step 4.
==========
- Browse to C:\Antispyware\rkfiles folder
- Double-click the RKFiles.bat to start it (Note: It will start scanning your computer and could take a little time. Be patient.)
- Copy and paste the contents of the RKFiles log in your next reply

Step 5.
==========
- Reboot back into " Normal Mode"
- Post back the Silent Runners and RKFiles logs
