Download spyware or other on CNET

Back in early June I went on GOOGLE to search for PCDeCrapifier as recommended by Kim Komando. I came up with CNET so I downloaded the file. Upon trying to install it I was ask's several times to install AVG search and their AVG bar. I clicked no three time but to no avail
when it installed PCDeCrapifier it also installed The Bar and search along with a site called WE-Care.com. I removed all of these via control panel. But I started getting alien audio. I have factory restored this thing 3 time but still get the audio various other abnormalties. Using Dell datasafe to restore does not remove old files or reformat the hard drive. Something is locked in my Google Chrome files. Even though I have removed them (Google) from all system files with W/Explorer I still get the audio back. I need to reformat the HD and re-install windows 7 Premium but they no longer ship CD's with the product so I am stuck. Is there any way to re-install after doing a reformat whic I can easily do? Just now the audio started again.

Hi v43petty43

Can I actuall get a copy of Windows 7 from Digital River
I do not recommend obtaining a legal copy of Windows 7 from anywhere except purchasing a retail copy or purchasing directly from Dell or Microsoft.
If you do not have the Dell Operating System Installation Disc and you have an expired warranty, you may want to purchase the Dell Direct USB Key Solution to reinstall Windows 7. http://www.dell.com/support/contents/us/en/19/article/Product-Support/Self-support-Knowledgebase/hardware-support/dell-usb-key

Click here to see which systems are supported:

You should phone Dell Technical Support for your region to request one.

Note: Most likely you will have the Dell preinstalled software bundled.

Please tell us your model of Dell.

Since its a Windows 7 install, you can use the Activation Backup and Recovery program to backup your OEM Microsoft Product Activation on a USB flash drive (scan this USB stick with another computer before proceeding and scan any drives with backed up files from this machine). You can then (using another computer) download a Windows 7 .iso from Digital River and create a bootable USB. I would advise securely wiping the problem machine with DBAN before clean installation to remove any trace of infection. See Windows Reinstallation Guide for details: http://philipyip.wordpress.com/dell-community-forums/

From Digital River you may download the Windows 7 .iso and use this to install Windows 7. See Heidoc.net for more details:

http://heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/14-windows-7-direct-download-links

Jan lists the direct links to the installation files. As mentioned this will only give you a 30 day trial of Windows 7. You will need to purchase the product key and simply input the product key and activate (opposed to reinstalling again). In general it is cheaper to buy boxed media from elsewhere (either an OEM license or an upgrade license).  For your computer its better to use the 64 bit installation files probably the 64 bit Home Premium English X17-58997.iso

DBAN is Darik's Boot and Nuke: http://www.dban.org/

Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN) is free erasure software designed for consumer use. DBAN users should be aware of some product limitations, including:

  • No guarantee that data is removed
  • Limited hardware support (e.g. no RAID dismantling)
  • No customer support

DBAN is a self-contained boot disk that automatically deletes the contents of any hard disk that it can detect. This method can help prevent identity theft before recycling a computer. It is also a solution commonly used to remove viruses and spyware from Microsoft Windows installations. DBAN prevents all known techniques of hard disk forensic analysis. It does not provide users with a proof of erasure, such as an audit-ready erasure report.

As you want to completely format your hard drive and mentioned a virus/spyware problem than use of DBAN is recommended. If you have a card reader you will need to disable it in the system BIOS before using DBAN otherwise it'll stall when it detects a blank drive.

The Windows Reinstallation Guide will explain the installation and use of DBAN in much more detail.

As mentioned on heidoc.net...

Digital River is Microsoft's service provider for e-commerce. Basically  every product that Microsoft sells in their online stores worldwide can be  found on the Digital River servers. The links to the Windows 7 RTM DVD  images are well known on the internet already. The latest links for images  with integrated Service Pack 1 (SP1) however haven't leaked before. Here  you'll find the official links for Windows 7 SP1 in Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese,  Spanish and Swedish.

Thus downloading the media from Digital River is equivalent to downloading it directly from Microsoft and it will allow for a clean installation of Windows 7. With the download you will not need to wait for media to be shipped to you and also won't be charged.

As mentioned by BugBatter the Dell USB key is another solution however if you decide to call technical support and ask for one, I would still recommend wiping with DBAN before using it as you suspect an underlying infection and want to ensure that your system is clean. Assuming the worst case scenario that the infection is clever enough to infect the recovery USB Windows installation files you will still have a bad install. With DBAN the USB used to start DBAN will also be securely wiped so the chances of this happening are incredibly slim.

The price of the recovery USB shouldn't be too high but you should consider looking at the price of a Windows 8 Professional Upgrade license before deciding to go with a purchase or not. Regarding Windows 8, you can try out the Windows 8.1 Consumer Preview to evaluate this option however if you purchase Windows 8 you will need to clean install again. Digital River unfortunately do not host Windows 8 .isos. Personally I recommend clean installation using the .iso which thousands of Dell users have carried out pretty easily.

Also some information regarding to the difference between the Digital River .iso and the recovery USB:

  • The recovery USB is reported to include the drivers and preinstalled software while in theory this should make things simpler. On the other hand software such as McAfee and Roxio can be detrimental to the performance of the system... and system performance from factory settings/recovery USB can often be worse than the performance from a direct clean installation. Moreover there is no option to remove unwanted preinstalled software besides manually uninstalling them after they are installed which can leave some unwanted files behind.
  • The Digital River .iso on the other hand is a vanilla installation disc like you would have got before Dell started the unfortunate OEM media reduction policy. It has nothing additional Dell adds to it. You can then get the latest drivers from the Dell website and install them in the correct order.
  • Preinstalled software may be obtained from My Dell Downloads if desired with the exception of:
  • Microsoft Office 2010 Starter which to be honest is totally obsolete and replaced by Microsoft Office 2013 Web Apps which is free and more functional.
  • Microsoft Office 2010 (full version if purchased) which can be downloaded from heidoc.net or directly from Microsoft.

Again the Reinstallation Guide explains the installation process in a lot more detail with the assumption that you are using a Digital River .iso or a Dell Reinstallation DVD however many of the steps are useful to carry out even if using the Dell Recovery USB.

downloading the media from Digital River is equivalent to downloading it directly from Microsoft
I would suggest contacting Microsoft to confirm that.

Regarding Service Packs, please refer to the following article for information:
