VPLEX with Multiple RP cluster is supported in VIPR 3.5?

Hi All, In a VIPR-C project, they have 2 Sites(Prod and DR). They have 4 RP clusters on each site, in which 1 Cluster has 4 RPA nodes.VMAX and XtremIO behind VPLEX. SRDF is also configured in VMAX. I want to know if this configuration of m@ultiple Recoverpoint Cluster connected to single VPLEX is supported in VIPR 3.5?

Will wait for the response.

Thanks

Hey Gaurav:

According to the SRM 4.0.2 SolutionPack Guide, page 121:

Only one RPA Cluster management IP address is required to discover data from the whole RecoverPoint System. Adding each RPA Cluster in the RecoverPoint System as a separate device is not required.

So if they are connected, I would think VIPR SRM should see them

Thanks

Tim

The question was for VIPR-C, not VIPR SRM

Gaurav, I don't see any reason not to support this.

I'm assuming the SAN fabrics are the same for all RP clusters / VPLEX/ backend arrays. I'm also assuming from above picture you would have 4 RP systems (= 4 pairs of 2 RP clusters linked together).

  • If you want to control which RP cluster will be used to protect your data, it would require to do some "varray isolation" per RP system.

That means :

- you will need to setup 8 VirtualArrays ; all VA can contain all VPLEX FE/BE ports + XIO and/or VMAX (depends on the design)

- you could perform varray isolation for each RP system by doing something like :

viprcli protectionsystem update -n urn:storageos:ProtectionSystem:ed07c909-7e5f-4aa0-a3f4-e0f5c25ed4b8:vdc1 -cid "RPsystem1" -varray_add urn:storageos:VirtualArray:15c5baa5-7d80-4624-8523-e3136272117d:vdc1

here you'll need the URN of your ProtectionSystem = your RP system and the URN of the Virtual Array you want to protect.

  • If you don't need to control which RP cluster will be used to protect your data, then VIPR would pick any RP system/cluster (in a round-robin manner I think). That's the way it should be, but I'm not sure this scenario has been fully tested/qualified.

Hi Julien,

Thanks for responding. We have little different RP setup.

Site 1 : Prod: We have 4 RP cluster, each cluster has 4 RP nodes. So on Prod site (4*4=16 RP Nodes)

Site 2 : DR : We have 4 RP cluster, each cluster has 4 RP nodes. So on Prod site (4*4=16 RP Nodes)

Will it support multiple cluster with vplex on same site ?

Thanks

Gaurav

Yes, but again I'm not sure this has been extensively tested.

I assume you would pair each Site1 RP cluster with a Site2 RP cluster (that would form a RP system then, and you'll have to discover it in VIPR).

The main question is : when you will provision RP protected volumes, do you want to control which RP clusters will be used ?
