Question on Quick Search.

I just noticed recently that when I search for a device (a virtual machine in my case) only one instance of it shows up in the results. We have two Virtual Machines with the same Device name (one Prod and one DR ) and only the DR device shows up in the quick search results.

Is there a way to work around this to get both of them to show up , apart from using the advanced search option ?

I am on v 4.0.1.

Thanks

Vaishak

Hello Vaishak Nair

I don't know if this is the answer you are looking for, but if you review your search results closer, it is actually giving you both results but group together the properties for the device "CATOIF04".  Look at the "Serial #:" data, you have two serial numbers.  That indicates to me it did find both instances.

The quick search is limited to only look up "device" entities with only the properties "Type", "Desc.", "Model", "IP:", "Serial", and "Availability". At least that is my findings from my environment. (4.0.1)

So it is giving you both results technically, but not with enough context or in a format to easily identify there are 2 results.

Hi Vaishak:

I am not sure why you would want two hosts on the same network with the same Host name, even if one is for DR.

That being said how are you discovering the 2 hosts? If you are discovering by IP address and not hostname, that may come in. The 2 host names would have to have different ip's and resolve correctly in DNS.

If you search for that host in mgt of database metrics, what properties are coming back?

Thanks

Tim

Hi Tim

These are Virtual Machines collected by the VM Ware vCenter SP. These VM's are collected from the VCenter and the VM's are configured in DR Site with the same name and same ip address.

I was going through the release notes for v 4.0.3 and found the below entry under "Known Problems and No Workarounds" which I think can be related to this problem.

EMP-4436 Web-Portal > Search The search generator is based on properties and each property supports one icon, unlike the topology report that permits multiple icons.

Hi Vaishak:

EMP-4436 deals with different icons on different reports for the same storage array,

This does not seem to be related to your issue.

So you have 2 active hosts on your network with same Ip address and host name? I would think DNS would only resolve to one.

If this was a cluster with different ip's you could discover through the seperate Ip's.

SRM will only pick up 1 host if 2 hosts have the same ip address and host name and are both active on the network.

Thanks

Thanks Tim,

Does SRM only pick 1 host out of 2 because the search function is based on properties ?

I am only trying to understand how the search functionality works.

Vaishak.

Vaishak:

it will discover based on IP address or Hostname

If there are 2 active VM's on the network with the same ip address and host name, then VIPR SRM will only see one.

Thanks

Thanks Tim,

I understand that VCenter discovery is through Hostname or IP Address. Please see the below image which is from VMware inventory reports

VMWare VCenter Inventory.JPG.jpg

Now if I search for the same VM, I only get one result

Vaishak:

I am assuming that you only have 1 host active as they share the same ip. It would make sense that you would only see 1 host as that is actve, How could the collector receive data on an inactive host. As far as your first screenshot, i am not sure if that is filtering on vstatus, which may be why you see it in your first screenshot. If you are discovering these VM's in other ways( i.e. phy host) then that could bring in another element here. If you are still questioning this, your best bet would be to open a Service Request with Dell/EMC support and someone can check this out

Thanks

Tim
