Unity config with Windows backup server
Hello ,
We have a couple of Unity arrays configured with ESXi with iSCSI.
We setup Veeam backup and at the moment it executes the jobs over network instead of Direct SAN access.
Are there any guides on how to properly connect a Windows server to EMC Unity for backup?
Does the VSS provider needs to be installed or not on the Windows server
Thank you

Hello JohnTsitsiklis,
We don’t have any guides for how to use windows backup with unity. You will need VSS to be installed if you are using snapshots.

VSS installation is mentioned in the documentation, but it is not clear
You mean Powerpath or the VSS (Dell EMC Unity Volume Shadow Service (VSS) Provider for Windows) from the download page?
In the description it states that it enables VSS hardware snapshots using both iSCSI and FC volumes
Is this not when you want to do storage snapshots directly?
If I want to just do a VMFS datastore snapshot through VMware APIs, windows VSS should work fine, no?

Hello JohnTsitsiklis,
Here is a link DELL EMC UNITY: SNAPSHOTS AND THIN CLONES which has our best practices for configuring snapshots.

Your backup software vendor Veeam should have documentation on how to configure this

Although Veeam has some documentation the configuration for the supported storages, the connection of a host to a Storage array I believe it falls under the storage vendor.
The integration of the storage to the host either it is a Windows /Linux or ESX should have been provided by Dell since the supported features are being provided by the storage vendor.
Now whether Veeam now wants to built on top of the arrays APIs , then yes Veeam should provide this documentation.
Unfortunately documentation is lacking in my opinion.
