Win10 Anniversary Updates causing BSOD - driver issue?

Hi all,

Could really use some help diagnosing BSOD that started with specific windows updates and is forcing me to continue to use a restore point of 11/4.

The following updates were downloaded and attempt to install with every startup

  • Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3200970)
  • Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3197954)
  • Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3199986)
  • Security Update for Adobe Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1607 (for x64-based Systems) (KB3202790)

The system will start and show landing page, it connects to wifi and when trying to sign in goes to BSOD. If you leave landing page, it will BSOD after about 20 seconds. The error message is an APC Index Mismatch issue.  I looked in the event log and think these are the relevant items

  • The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000001 (0x00007ffe579a65e4, 0x0000000000000001, 0x0000000000000000, 0xffffb601fc058b80). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 4a42154b-c4e6-48ca-8eff-9946ca8b2e19
  • Intel(R) Management Engine Interface driver has failed to perform handshake with the Firmware.

I've been posting back and forth over at the MS community but thus far just being told to do the standard collect dmps and post, hoping someone here might be able to assist in resolving.

System Specs:

Dell Venue 11 7130vPro
Dual Intel i5-4300Y / 1.6Ghz

8G RAM

256 Storage

64bit OS

Windows 10 Pro Version 1607, OS build 14393.321

Log Files and Sys32file:

 https://1drv.ms/u/s!AiJvkB_7rIkmoirXtG4yC3ojosbU

*older files are initial pulls, 2nd set with 12 Nov date were collected after running driver verifier.

Of note - looking at device manager, the Intel Management Interface now has an error icon (wasn't there before the above updates downloaded). Attempted to roll back the driver, but it's the original. Tried to update the driver but it fails to intall, 'device cannot start code 10'

I haven't yet run memtest -

If anyone could provide info/guidance I'd be very appreciative!

Thanks

Hi,

Good work on troubleshooting. I would suggest you to completely uninstall ' from device manager.

1. Open ‘Device Manager’ by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type ‘Device Manager’, and then, in the list of results, click ‘Device Manager’.

2. When the device manager pops up, in the list please check for ‘ Intel Management Interface’.

3.  Right click on it and click on ‘Uninstall’.

4.  Check the box which says delete the software and click ‘OK’.

6.  Restart the system and start the installation of the chipset driver.

Not good news unfortunately. After uninstalling and restarting I still got BSOD, and since there was a system change a new restore point was created which has app apparently eliminated my last working restore point. I now cannot get in to the system as it continues to try to install updates and goes to BSOD.

Will try to disrupt boot process and do a system check. Fingers crossed

Hi Ravi, thanks again for your assistance and guidance - unfortunately neither removing the driver or running troubleshooting from preboot solved the issue. I forgot to add to my troubleshooting post the stop code of APC Index Mismatch - I'm good at troubleshooting basics but not IT savvy enough to understand reading bug files and running code/scripts. I'm resorting to starting in safe mode with networking - ran chkdsk which found some issues but trying to run /F (fix) wouldn't work as the system said I was in read only.

Next step - attempting to use the Dell diagnositics from safe mode with networking - however I've got both sysdetect and support assist installed but the checker stops after step 2 (install sys detect) - so I could use some advice on how to manually let the diagnostic tool know I have these items ready to go?

Hi,

As a work around you can disable that particular windows update using the link : http://dell.to/2fYy2B9

Can't do that as I can only access the system in safe mode. Tried that prior to losing my last good restore point but it had no effect.

The issue looks to be an asynchronous call to a db that appears to have been moved or overwritten during the update and subsequent changes. I don't know enough about Windows and code/scripting so I'm sending the unit in for warranty support.

Thanks for helping me troubleshoot Ravi! :)

Thanks Ravi,

I ended up having to reset boot sequence from windows boot to the sandisk boot mgr and resetting the system from there. Attempting to reset the system from within the windows troubleshooter was failing, but the reset from the system boot did the trick :)

Now I no longer need to send my system back to depot for troubleshooting - thanks for your assistance yet again!
