Venue 8 Pro (5855) Auto-rotation gone after updates

There were a few automatic updates - between Microsoft and Dell - and now there is no "rotation" button in the Win10 panel and automatic rotation no longer works - only manual. I've manually installed all available drivers from the Dell downloads section.

How to resolve?

I couldn't figure out which update broke it. I think it's a windows update that stopped the rotation sensor.  I did a couple registry hacks and got the button back, but it wouldn't recognize the rotation.

Reinstalling requires a keyboard and mouse (not BT) .... and a USB Type-C adapter ($5 from your local computer store).

I had to disable bitlocker (took a day to decript) first, then follow this:

I couldn't find the factory restore option, but I could do a full refresh, then apply drivers and updates.

Hi,

Thank you for writing to us!

Kindly try the following steps .

To turn on, or turn off screen rotation, swipe in from the right, select PC Settings and look for the Screen icon. Tap the Screen icon and you will see a vertical slide control for brightness.  At the top of the brightness control you will see a rectangle, representing a screen, with a curved arrow at the lower right corner. Tap the rectangle once to lock the screen rotation in the current position, portrait or landscape. The curved arrow will change to a lock.  To unlock screen rotation, follow the same procedure, tap the rectangle with the lock and it will change back to the curved arrow.

Thanks,

Robin

You've misunderstood.  It's not that we don't know how to USE rotation lock. it's that the button disappeared.

I reinstalled Windows.  It's back.

How did you reinstall Windows, Mike? From what installation media?

Robin, there /should/ be a "rotation lock" button in that set of buttons.

And it should auto-rotate. It doesn't auto-rotate any more. I was hoping for some driver fix or something. But if Mike can point me to whatever media to reinstall Windows, that'll do.

Mike, can you please confirm that the reinstall did resolve the problem for you?    If so, have you taken updates again and did it remain fixed or did it break again?

Yes, it's currently working properly.

All the drivers from the website.  Windows with all updates.  I did NOT install the intel drivers from the Dell driver download app. It errors out anyhow.

Another possible option to try for this (I haven't yet had it happen on any of my devices so don't know if this will work or not) would be to download the chipset driver to your desktop (or another location where you can easily find it), uninstall the existing chipset driver and then install the downloaded one again.   This will reinstall the video and sensor drivers.

There are reports of this on other non-Dell devices, so I suspect Microsoft has something going on.   Perhaps we will get a hotfix here soon.

I did the "refresh" thing finally. What a PITA. It's pretty much a start-over, as it removes all apps and their settings. But... I was tired of not having the auto-rotation OR the rotation lock button.

So... after the refresh, everything works again. Reinstalled all the Microsoft updates and everything still works. Turned on System Restore options this time so I can roll back perhaps.

Haven't put in ALL the Dell updates yet, but now that I have a full system backup I'll give them a try.

Great news is that everything seems to run better. There must have been something funky in whatever mix of stuff that installed the first time.

Also FTR, I've got a Lexar 128G MicroSD and it's nearly double the performance of the Samsung 128G I had before. I'm surprised and pleased.
