What methods are available to monitor hardware issues?
What methods are available to monitor hardware issues?
I have a few dozen dell servers and will be adding many more very soon. The short question is, what can I use to manage these? I need a way to know that I don't have any failed disks in servers. I need to know that there aren't any fan failures. You get the idea.
All of my servers have DRACs.
My environment is a mix of ESXi, Linux, and Windows.
I tried to install the IT Assistant. My inital response is "what an annoying buggy application" - I had to search through different errors related to java settings, blah blah. I then ran windows update, installed IE9 and wasn't ever able to get logged in again.
In my environment, how am I supposed to monitor physical failures from a central location? SNMP would be great...

I would recommend installing open manage on each device you want to manage.
Here is some documentation on open manage.
ESXi
support.euro.dell.com/.../instesxi.htm
Linux
linux.dell.com/.../hardware
linux.dell.com/.../hardware

Windows install file.
www.dell.com/.../DriverFileFormats
List of OMSA videos.
support.ap.dell.com/.../ss_omsa
Then install open manage essentials to monitor those devices from a central location.
Here is some documentation that will help you get started with open manage essentials.

Hope this information helps out.
Thanks.

There is no way to get any of this through SNMP and the DRAC? We have a lot of systems that boot to a USB key and do not run a "standard" linux distro such as red hat...

I'm not aware if a way to do this without an agent running on the system. You can look at some items via the idrac, but not a centralized software like ITA or OME as Daniel suggested above.

If you are not running a supported or "standard" OS, then you can set up a DRAC card to send SNMP traps to OME, ITA, or DMC. The problem with that setup is that DRACs don't send as much information as OMSA. Some DRACs, for instance, can't send SNMP traps for any kind of storage related problem.
The key things to configure are the community string and trap destination in the DRAC, then discover the DRACs with the management station software using the SNMP protocol.

I have installed the openmanage client on an ESXi 5 server. I have connected to it from an openmanage web server. I have configured the ESXi host to send SNMP traps to an OpenManage Essentials system. Should I expect OpenManage essentials to pick up the ESXi host (not including the drac) ?

DELL-Jeff M brings up a good point. Here is some info on SNMP traps through the DRAC.

We use Microsoft SCOM to monitor the Dell hardware. Works OK. U get an alert when something dies.
Cheers,
