DMX1000 - This Symmetrix does not have any gatekeepers

Hi

I've been given access to a really old DMX1000 so I can brush up my skills but I've run in to a brick wall. There appear to be no Gatekeeper LUNs available so I can't discover or admin the array.

When I query the array I get the following

Symmetrix ID: 000XXXXXXXX

                             Total Paths      Unique Paths

                             -----------      ------------

  Pdevs                                8                 8

  GK Candidates                        0                 0

  Dedicated GKs                        0                 0

  VCM/ACLX devs                        0                 0

  Pdevs in gkavoid                     0

  Pdevs in gkselect                    0

  Max Available GKs                    1

  Num Open GKs                         0

  Gatekeeper Utilization

    Current                            0 %

    Past Minute                        0 %

    Past 5 Minutes                     0 %

    Past 15 Minutes                    0 %

    Since Midnight                     0 %

    Since Starting                     0 %

  Highwater

    Open Gatekeepers                   0

    Time of Highwater                 N/A

    Gatekeeper Utilization             0 %

    Time of Highwater                 N/A

  Gatekeeper Timeouts

    Since starting                     0

    Past Minute                        0

    Time of last timeout              N/A

*WARNING* This Symmetrix does not have any gatekeepers

I can see some Gatekeepers but these are from a VMAX and not the DMX

I've read about the VMC, so tried zoning my server to FCA but had no luck...

Any suggestions?

Have you tried running the symcli commands you are interested in yet? They should work as you have 8 data devices present. There is a GK selection process - the rules are documented in the install guide. Data devices can act as GK's if there are no GK's present. So can the VCMDB device. At least enough functionality to provision yourself some GK's.

Hi

Thanks for coming back to me

Yep tried running a discover and list.

C:\Program Files\EMC\SYMCLI\bin>symcfg discover

This operation may take up to a few minutes. Please be patient...

C:\Program Files\EMC\SYMCLI\bin>symcfg list

                               S Y M M E T R I X

Mcode    Cache      Num Phys  Num Symm

SymmID       Attachment  Model     Version  Size (MB)  Devices   Devices

    000198701314 Local       VMAX10K   5876       43008         8       338

C:\Program Files\EMC\SYMCLI\bin>

But this only lists the VMAX and not the DMX.

The DMX disks are the ones marked M (9) above. If I add one of these disks to a gkselect file would this work?  What format should I use to ID the disks is it the name? e.g. \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE14

What version of SE are you using? In Version 8.2, support for Microcode 5875 and below was dropped. That may be the issue?

Hi

Thanks for getting back to me. I've just checked and v7.6.2 is installed. I've downloaded 8.1 so will give that a go. Do you know if 7.6.2 supports Microcode 5875 or where I can check

Thanks again
