any option to write zeros to a lun from Symm

In Hitachi USPV, there is a shredder function to write 0 to a lun for 3 - 9 times.  Business asks if such tool exist for VMAX.  I never heard of such tool in Symm but want to confirm.

A VTOC could be run against a single device, but that is not a customer command.

How about dd if=/dev/zero of=

Not sure what the windows equivalent would be.

Hi Quincy!

I always appreciate your insightful comments, and I finally have a chance to reply directly to one of your replies:

In this case, I think they're looking for a customer-facing tool ala the USPV.  The USPV can run commands from the CLI or Device Manager and execute writes against an LDEV.  Does the VMAX allow end-users to do the same?

Thanks!

Karl

I assume you want to securely erase any data on the VMAX.  Writing zeros multiple times won't securely erase the data.  You must write various different patterns of data to accomplish that.

There is a secure drive erase feature built into the VMAX that will do that.

I believe the erase tool from VMAX is at physical disk level.  Not at lun level.  I try to see if there is a tool in VMAX allow secure erase of a lun.  Actually, I suggest them to run it from host side but for some reason, they want to see if such tool exists for VMAX.

Thanks!

EMC has a secure data erasure service offering to wipe an entire array. Your local sales team can help you there.

To do a similar job on a lun or set of luns in windows, take a look at the SDelete utility for example. There are numerous free or paid alternatives to SDelete available.
