Adding a new VMAX to the management host

Folks, We need to add a new VMAX40K to a new management server [UNIX] in our environment. I have drafted steps that I need to follow, but I would like to have your expertise here.

1. Make sure ACLX device is mapped to all FAs - Especially to the FAs where I am going to connect my management server.

2. Install SE in my management server.

3. Pick up two FAs and zone the server.

4. Run symcfg disco and see whether I am able to see the VMAX 40K.

5. Planning to use Thin GKs [5876 SE 7.6] - Allocate 6 or more GKs to both the HBAs [Add MV components] and define them as GKs using symgate.

6. Unmap the ACLX device from all the FAs.

Do I need to make any changes in the local SYMAPI database after adding the new VMAX?

Please feel free to add your suggestions and corrections. Appreciate your time and help.

Cheers

looks good, i would not zone/mask more than one path to your gatekeepers unless you are running PowerPath on that host. I had symcli syscalls going out of one HBA and coming back to the other ...it was causing our clones to fail because commands would get lost in the middle of conversation.  I leave ACLX mapped to FAs that i am using for symcli/UVMAX ..etc

Thank you, Dynamox. Other day, I was reading a post in the community which stated that starting from 5876 and SE 7.4 gatekeepers need not to be presented in single path [3rd party multi-pathing s/w is also supported]. Is that correct?

I would rather adhere to the legacy method i.e., do not share GKs between HBAs but I would like to validate the information that I read.

I was on 7.6 when i was having these issues. Specifically i was presenting gatekeepers as RDMs (physical mode) to my VMs that were used for symcli/Unisphere for VMAX. ESX 5.5 wanted to use Round Robin when i discovered the gatekeepers and that's when i started having issues with clones and SRDF ( i had two paths per gatekeeper device). So i went into VMware and change path selection  policy for gatekeeprs from Round Robin to Fixed and that resolved my issues.  Take a look at SE 7.6 release notes/installation guide, if it says multipathing is supported then go for it. If you start having weird issues with TimeFinder/SRDF then you can always remove additional paths.
