Uninstall Dell SupportAssist

I have a Precision 7760 that came with SA and the apps are updated, but I have not downloaded the "Windows OS repair and restore features are available for download" that I am asked to download when opening SA (although the OS Recovery Partition is installed).  I have Pro Support Plus but Dell Pro Support has not been able to answer what this download does and I have read that it can corrupt/delete the system partitions in this post.

https://www.dell.com/community/SupportAssist-for-PCs/SupportAssist-Os-Recovery-can-t-install/m-p/7876488/highlight/true#M91513

Further no system repair points are being made.  Also noted here:

https://www.dell.com/community/SupportAssist-for-PCs/SupportAssist-OS-Recovery-v5-4-3-15135-Not-Creating-System/m-p/8000539/highlight/true#M91834

I have turned off the System Repair, not downloading the OS Recover, and do not plan to use Tune Performance, Optimize Network, or Remove Viruses.  So with that, I want to remove it.

I see in the FAQ

https://www.dell.com/community/SupportAssist-for-PCs/SA-uninstall-reinstall/td-p/6056368

The below are the steps to uninstall SupportAssist.  I have installed:

I have three SupportAssist programs listed under Programs and Features:

  1. Dell SupportAssist 3.10.1.23
  2. Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update 5.4.1.14954
  3. Dell SupportAssist Remediation 5.4.3.15135

1. Is there a specific order these are supposed to be uninstalled in?

2. Can I delete this folder opposed to just the contents?

C:/ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\

3. Does this leave the Bios SupportAssist and recovery partition in place?

4.  Are there any negative things that can happen if I remove SA?

Uninstall SA
* Right click the Start menu button and select Control Panel

* Under Programs, select Uninstall a program

* In the list of programs, locate and select Dell SupportAssist

* At the top of the window, select Uninstall

* When done, look for Dell SupportAssist Agent, Dell SupportAssist Update Plugin, and Dell SupportAssist Remediation. If found, select Uninstall

* When done, restart the PC

How to delete the older SA snapshot files after uninstalling SA
* Click the Windows icon
* Type file
* Click File Explorer
* Click View
* Add a check to Hidden items
* Open C:/ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\SnapShots
* Press Ctrl A to highlight all
* Click Delete on the keyboard

1. Is there a specific order these are supposed to be uninstalled in? :  No you can remove them in any order

2.Can I delete this folder opposed to just the contents? : yes you can. But restart the machine once you have remove all 3 application. Some of these application needs reboot to finish uninstallation.

3. Does this leave the Bios SupportAssist and recovery partition in place?: Yes it will, but in case there is an update to SupportAssist OS recovery (F12 option) you will not get an update. Though it hardly matters as main functionality of SA OS recovery is to reinstall OS.

4. Are there any negative things that can happen if I remove SA? : You will not be prompted for Driver updates in Future. You won't be able to check for Driver updates from support site either as it requires SupportAssist to be installed.

My recommendation : Leave everything as it is, Turn Automatic Scans and update check disabled in Supportassist settings. turn automatic repair off. Its a useful tool.

I uninstalled SA and the two plug ins.  I uninstalled these three items.

  1. Dell SupportAssist 3.10.1.23
  2. Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update 5.4.1.14954
  3. Dell SupportAssist Remediation 5.4.3.15135

Rebooted and no issue.  I did not have any snapshops to delete.  Under

C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair

the only items is a folder called Config.  I do have enabled to show hidden files and not hide protected system files.

As you noted, I now see that I cannot run any online scans on the support site.

If I reinstall SA, does it also install the other plug ins?

I can still check for updates using Command Update (comes with Precision) but I cannot do online hardware scans now.  However, I can do scans via the F12.  I am not sure of these are the same, more, or less of a scan.

Yes leave it this way

use command update for updates and F12 for hardware diagnostics

Installing SA again will  not bring those 3 Items back

If you reinstall SA , It will check for updates and will recommend you those 3 items again its up to you whether you want to install them or not.
