SUPPORT ASSIST UPDATE 5.5.5.16201 FAILS

I have a Dell  XPS 8930. Support Assist tells me I need the 5.5.5.15201 version 10/26/22 update and yet when I instruct the program to update it registers "Failed." I have tried this several times. I have also checked with Microsoft Update, and my Windows 11 OS is up to date.

Hi marksprowl:

It sounds like SupportAssist is trying to install a new update for your Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.x (also known Dell SupportAssist Remediation or System Repair) and not your SupportAssist v3.x utility. If you aren't familiar with this emergency recovery software see the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery User’s Guide.

Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features shows that my Inspiron 5584 / Win 10 Pro v21H2 OS currently has SupportAssist v3.12.3.5 (installed 11-Oct-2022) and Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.5.4.16189 (installed 23-Aug-2022). I normally have SupportAssist disabled on my Inspiron 5584 (I find it's too buggy and uses too many system resources - see the final comments in my 25-Oct-2022 post <here>) and I prefer to use Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.x to check for available updates. However, I started SupportAssist v3.12.3.5 manually today and the only update that my SupportAssist "Get Driver & Downloads" scan found was for a driver for my Realtek memory card reader. This Realtek driver is also the only available update currently detected by my Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.0 app.

My best guess is that Dell started pushing out a new Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.5.16201 to a small number of users with certain computer models, including your XPS 8930. It's possible that "early adopters" reported problems with this v5.5.5.16201 update and that Dell has pulled the installer from their download servers - I've had this happen myself in the past (see my 03-Dec-2020 post in Ashok Kumar Reddy G's SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools Version 5.2.2.12981 Failed to Install in inspiron 14 5490 Brand New Laptop for one example). Since it's early in the rollout I'd suggest you just monitor this SupportAssist for PCs board for now and see if anyone else reports that v5.5.5.16201 installed successfully.

Just an aside, but note that there is an installer for Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 (Dell-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_0991N_WIN_4.7.1_A00.EXE, rel. 24-Nov-2022) listed on the support page <here> for your XSP 8930.  There are several Win 11 users reporting issues with the current SupportAssist v3.12.3.5, so if you haven't already done so you might want to try installing this app to see if it is able to detect and successfully install Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.5.16201.  Be sure to enter your unique Service Tag on that support page to ensure any drivers or software suggested for your XPS 8930 are filtered to match your specific system configuration.
