Support Assist and automatically driver updates fail on XPS 15 9570 Windows 11

XPS 15 9570

XPS 15 9570

I tried to upgrade my Support Assist version several times today and it failed each time, advising that I restart my XPS 15 9570, which I did.

Using the older version of Assist version, it can do everything but help me update my drivers, Bios, etc.

I did try to update my drivers on the online Dell site, but this failed as well, I am getting the message:

Driver detection not available

Please try again later or use the link below to find drivers by Service Tag or see a list of drivers available for your product.

Checking to manually update, I am suggested to below drivers, but I am worried to process as I am not sure of the order or if they are already installed on my PC, as some seem to be quite old and I am sure Support Assist and the driver updates were working at the time:

Hi PatriciaMH:

What is the edition (Home or Pro), version and build number of your Win 11 OS shown at Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications?  What is your current SupportAssist version shown at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features?

Is either the Dell Command | Update v4.6.0 or Dell Command | Update for Windows Universal v4.6.0 that is currently listed on the support page <here> for your XPS 15 9570 / Win 11 machine already installed on your system (check at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features)?  If installed, does a check for updates run correctly from Dell Command | Update? Like SupportAssist v3.x, Dell Update v4.x and Dell Command | Update v4.x should only find updates recommended for your unique Service Tag.

Note:  If you don't have either of these programs installed I would suggest downloading and installing Dell Command | Update for Windows Universal v4.6.0 (Dell-Command-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_HG8CC_WIN_4.6.0_A00.EXE).  The Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app seems to run better on my Insprion 5584 / Win 10 machine.

Just an aside, but NOTE that I never allow SupportAssist or Dell Update to install a BIOS update on my Inspiron 5584 - I always close all my running programs, download the standalone .exe installer from the support page for my Inspiron 5584 and save it to my desktop, right-click, and choose "Run as Administrator". There are even some users who don't feel this "Update from Windows" method is safe and prefer to use the "Update from BIOS Boot Menu" method using a removable USB thumb drive. Both these methods are described in the detailed release notes <here> for the latest Dell XPS 15 9570 System BIOS v1.26.0 released on 09-Aug-2022 (see the section titled "Installation Instructions").

Auto driver update via Dell's Web site or the Support Assist App have not worked for me since 18 August. I have all the latest Dell Support Assist version and latest Dell Update App software.

Consistently getting the following message when trying to update via Web site:

Driver detection not available! Please try again later or use the link below to find drivers by Service Tag or see a list of drivers available for your product.

Hi d2randall:

What is the exact error message you see when you try to run a manual "Get Drivers & Downloads" check for updates from the SupportAssist user interface (i.e., not via the web site)?

What is your Windows operating system [if Win 10 or Win 11 include the edition (Home or Pro), version and build number shown at Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications]? Unless I found the wrong support page, the Drivers & Downloads tab at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-ca/product-support/product/alienware-area51-alx/drivers  only lists 64-bit Vista and Win 7 SP1 as supported operating systems.  The minimum system requirements <here> for SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 note that you must have Win 10 or Win 11, so even if you have a Win 7 SP1 OS with SHA-2 code signing support (KB4474419) you would not be able to run SupportAssist on this legacy machine.

The latest available BIOS listed <here> for the Alienware Area-51 ALX is Alienware Area 51 System BIOS v. A10 (rel. 08-Mar-2012).  If I found the correct support page for your Dell model, is there any reason why you still have BIOS vA07?

If I've made a mistake and you have a newer Alienware model with Win 10 or Win 11, when you check at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features does it show that you have the latest SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 as well as MS .NET (Core) Runtime v5.0.17 installed? Note that MS .NET Runtime v5.0.17 is a new system requirement for v3.11.4.29 (see the minimum system requirements posted <here>)? From my Inspiron 5584:

Win 10 Pro v21H2 Control Panel SupportAssist v3_11_4_29 and MS NET Runtime v5_0_17 21 Aug 2022.png

Again, if you have a Win 10 or Win 11 OS, when you go to Start | Windows Administrative Tools | Services can you see two services named Dell Client Management Service and Dell TechHub, and do both services have a Status of "Running"? If you have SupportAssist v3.11.4.29, note that Dell TechHub is a new service that should have been added by the SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 installer - Dell employee jbilinski posted on 28-Jun-2022 in Admiral1989's SupportAssist - Installation Failed Message that "Dell TechHub replaces Dell Hardware Scan service and is needed to run the Hardware Scan panel" in SupportAssist v3.11.4.29.

Hello lmacri,

Thank you very much for your help, installing Dell Command | Update for Windows Universal v4.6.0 did the trick. When launched, it found the drivers updates required for my laptop, 2 only, and installed them,  one of them was the System BIOS.

My laptop seems to work normally and now  Dell Command | Update tells me that I am up-to-date, as does Windows update.

Once again, thank you very much for your help, it was very much appreciated.

Have a great day.

P.

Hi PatriciaMH:

Thanks for letting us know that Dell Command | Update for Windows Universal v4.6.0 is working correctly on your XPS 15 9570 / Windows 11 laptop.

There are several users currently having issues installing or running the latest SupportAssist v3.4.11.29 (rel. 23-Jun-2022) and many have decided to stop using this software for now and wait for Dell to release a new version of SupportAssist that will hopefully install and run correctly on their system. If you prefer to use SupportAssist and want to try and get it working on your XPS laptop see the comments I posted <above> for d2randall about potential problems with the MS .NET Runtime v5.0.17 as well as the two services named Dell Client Management Service and Dell TechHub - that might be a good place to start your troubleshooting.

Just an FYI that I personally don't like SupportAssist - it's too buggy, consumes too many system resources, and the "system optimization" scans (Clean Files / Tune Performance / Optimize Network) are too aggressive and have the potential to do more harm than good - see my 12-Jul-2021 comment in ex-jedi's Prevent Automatic Recycle Bin Emptying. I have disabled my Dell SupportAssist and Dell TechHub services so SupportAssist can't launch automatically at boot-up on my Inspiron 5584, and I've started using Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.x to check for Dell software and driver updates. If I ever need to run a hardware scan I can still run Dell's F12 ePSA (enhanced Pre-boot System Assessment) hardware diagnostics from my BIOS, and my Windows 10 OS also has its own built-in hardware diagnostics at Settings | Update & Security | Troubleshoot | Additional Troubleshooters.

It is running now after downloading the latest Dell-Update-Alienware-Update-Universal-Application_HYC7X_WIN_4.6.0_A00.EXE. Received this update today and it fixed the issue.

Hi d2randall:

Thanks for letting us know that installation Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.6.0 solved your problem.

See my 17-Aug-2022 post in campfiresmoke's Windows Universal Application 4.6.0 A00 about a bug described in the Known Issues section of the SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 release notes <here> that state that driver scans in SupportAssist may not work correctly after Dell Update is installed or updated. There seems to be a glitch on some systems where the order of installation of SupportAssist v3.11.4.11 and Dell Update / Dell Command | Update v4.6.0 can cause SupportAssist to stop working correctly. Some users like campfiresmoke found they had to uninstall SupportAssist, update Dell Update / Dell Command | Update to the latest version using the .exe installer posted on the support page of their Dell computer model, and then reinstall SupportAssist to get SupportAssist working again.
