after system restoring by supportassist recovery tool, all my file is gone.

Alienware Aurora R13

Alienware Aurora R13

I am back again. I have posted about my desktop noise 8 month ago and never received a solution. Yesterday, I have installed a drive update recommended by dell supportassist and did not work well. So, I chose to click restore and the nightmare begin: I can't boot my desktop anymore and after two or three boost failure, the support&assist show up and try to repair my system but not worked. So, after many  tries, I gave up and try to restore my system (this is the last option from the recovery tool). The consequence is: after I backed up my file and follow all instruction, all my file was gone but the system show my files have been retrieved. All I want is please, please, please give my file back. The file contains all my effort of working and all the book I have collected through my entire life.
There are also some other issues, like the commend center I installed from service website cant not show how CPU and memories status, it is only able to show GPU and also rest of alienware software all gone but they are not important compare to data loss. PLease kindly give my files back. Please.2d162e8d0b99ab26d036c5f745bfc87.jpg
Please

Please check picture to see what I am talking about, like I said, the back up detail show the folder such as book, fidelity, but the reality is nothing back up successfully ( I retore all my file on desktop)
Please help me this is not the problem like noise I can bear with it.

Someone who actually has Support-Assist installed (and hopefully has some experience with this particular sub-feature) will have to answer.

I am reminded that some holes are very hard to dig-yourself out of.

In the future, if you are going to use these kind of tools, please first at least backup your vital files, and preferably ... do a Full-System Image-File Backup (with something like Macrium Reflect).

Yes, so many make the mistake of not making a proper backup when a free tool that is part of Windows is available for free. It is called OneDrive. All of my important documents are stored in the Cloud just for this reason alone.

Now the OP may have no other choice but to look into a data recovery service.

MayB you had Windows File Save ‘on’ ? ( the one in control panel next to Win7 backups.)?

Or you have been using one drive?  Also look around in Windows files MayB temp file for the ones that supposed to have been backed up already.

Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery allows you to back up personal files on a local hard drive or on an external storage device.

Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery recommended you to back up the files before starting Factory Image Restore. You can choose the option ‘Yes, back up my files’ or ‘No, do not back up my files’. The former one enables you to retrieve files after resetting your computer and the latter one will permanently delete all system data and personal files on your hard drive.

So the million dollar question is, what location did you choose to save the backup?  Or what selection did you make?

If you selected the same disk as the drive you restored, that would not be good...

I am in the exact same situation as Zheming.

In the RESET procedure, I selected to save all files and settings.

It told me that there was not sufficient space and I'd need to use a USB drive. This implies that it would somehow be able to use free space on the C: (OS) drive if there were enough space. So I installed a 5 TB USB drive, so it could back up my 400GB of files and settings.

It went through the procedure, restored Windows 11 in the basic unmodified state, and does not seem able to do any restoration of files or settings at all.

Now I can see on that USB drive, the Dell software created a file, \Do_Not_Delete\USMT\migstore\files\USMT\usmt.mig which is 353GB in size (and with the other content in that directory, I can believe most of the files and settings are in that directory).

So it seems my data was stored, and I can see it now (in a single .mig file) on the external USB drive, but the Dell SupportAssist Recovery Assistant software fails to find it. I can only tell it "Retrieve More Files" which causes it to search for a while and then tell me it cannot find any. It would be nice if I could point it to the directory. Or maybe I need to manually copy that directory to the C: drive???

BTW, this all was caused by my under-warranty laptop getting consistent BSODs that I had been living with, and then I got one during a Windows Update which led me to this situation, needing to do the RESET operation. And Dell is denying any help since the warranty is only for hardware.

I've made some progress on this. I recommend you take a look at this other thread, which I will update as I get things done.
