Simpletech external hard drive not recognized

sounds like a common problem. bought a simpletech 500 gb external hard drive.  connected to a dimension 4400.  my computer maps the new drive but keep getting 'insert disc' message and can't open simpletech drive.  similar message from simpletech help desk to others on the forum to install dell chip set driver which didn't do anything (already installed).  also upgraded usb ports to 2.0, but nothing so far helps.

any ideas other than returning the simpletech drive and changing to one that is compatible with dell? which brands are compatible?

Interesting, I just installed a simpletech 750 on my 8400 running vista, worked like a charm.

Are you running other USB devices?

Try just running the external HDD with no other USB devices, see if there is a difference.  You also may try a powered USB hub

I also bought a 500 Gig hard drive.  Got it to work fine on one Dell desktop, wouldn't work on another.  Same model of Dell Optiplex 745.  Was told to update Chip Set Driver.  No success.  Baffled!?!?
