Roxio Creator hangs system or generates errors when reading/burning disks

Just purchased a DELL Dimension 9200 with Vista Home Premium.  Came with "TSSTcorp DVD-ROM" and "PBDS DVDRW DL" drives.  Using Windows Explorer I can open and view the contents of all DVDs without problems using either drive.

When I open Roxio Creator and choose "Copy Disc" if I insert a disk into the DVD-ROM drive (as source) it frequently hangs the program and Windows along with it when it tries to read the disk.  This is before even clicking the button to burn.  For some disks it’ll get farther along and go through much of the burning process before ending with the following error message:

There was an error writing the image to your hard drive.  Please make sure you have 0 KB free on any one of your hard drives, then try the copy again.

These problems seem to occur when I try to read DVD+R data disks (various brands) that were burned on another computer (using Nero Express running XP).  Note that these disks did not present a problem on the other computer nor do I have problems viewing or copying their contents on my new PC using Windows Explorer and either drive.

DVD-R disks and CDs burned using the other computer have not caused Roxio Creator any problems even when using the “Copy Disc” feature.  Also a DVD+R disk that caused Roxio Creator to hang when trying to read it from the DVD-ROM drive burned fine using the “Copy Disc” feature when using the DVDRW drive as both source and destination.

I’m baffled by why Roxio Creator is choking on so many disks and in some cases crashing my computer.  I reinstalled Roxio Creator but it didn’t help.

Hi Bowls,

Some believe the issue with Roxio and Vista is related to their Packet Writing program DLA. Many have completely removed DLA; others have used the following patch; Dell article. Still others, have moved to Nero.

Best Regards

Hi Predator,

I uninstalled Roxio's Drag-to-Disc, which I take it is the same as DLA, leaving the rest of the Roxio programs that came preinstalled intact.  Unfortunately, that didn't help.  Even without Drag-to-Disc installed the same problems continue.  Any other ideas?

Cheers,
bowls

Hi Bowls,

How about trying a "clean" uninstall of Roxio per the steps I have listed in Section 13-0, article 32 of the CD/RW link in my post. Then reinstall Roxio, minus DLA and see if this helps.

Best Regards

:smileysad:  no luck -- I did a clean uninstall as described here:
and with the help of the roxizap and the Windows Install Cleanup program you mentioned on your website.  I then installed Roxio Creator from scratch, excluding the Drag-to-Disc component.  But the problem persists.

I don't understand how my system can hang (necessitating a cold reboot) by simply inserting a disk into the DVD-ROM drive with Roxio Creator open, especially when the same disk opens fine using the same drive in Windows Explorer and it also works fine when inserted into the DVDRW drive even with Roxio Creator open.

Hi Bowls,

Indeed you do have a good one my friend. Have you checked for a possible firmware update for DVD-ROM using the Drivers & Downloads link on the left of this page?

Best Regards!

Yes, I couldn't find any firmware updates for my DVD-ROM drive.

Did you ever resolve your problem?  I have the same drives, but on an Inspiron 531 that I'm struggling with - sometimes am able to burn discs, most times not.  After burning, sometimes can read them, most times can not.  Running Vista Home premium.  Still using Roxio Creator DE which is the only time I've had luck burning - never with the native Vista program.  But Roxio doesn't always work either.  I'm nervous about some of the fixes I've read about since this is a brand new system and I don't want to screw it up!!
