Inspiron 17-7779 SSD Upgrade

I just purchased a Dell Inspiron 17-7779 and wanted to add a SSD.  I'm new to these things and thought I was going to be adding a 1TB SSD to work along side my existing 1TB hard drive. I didn't realize at the time that the 2nd slot for the SSD was an "M.2" rather than a 2.5" type drive. I had no idea there was a difference. So I ended up pulling out my existing 1TB hard drive and replacing it with a 1TB SSD.

My question is this: is there any performance difference between these 2 types of SSD's? I guess I could pull the 2.5" SSD out and return it, but what a pain!

Thanks :)

On this model, the performance will be the same since both are SATA devices.

Newer systems with M.2 support NVMe drives, which are much faster than SATA -- but that's not a possibility on this model, so as long as you're not going to need the hard drive, you'll do just fine with the 2.5" SSD.

thanks so much for the info - I'm slowly learning how this SSD stuff works. I wish I had asked questions and did my research sooner, as I could have kept the hard drive as-is and added the SSD which was my original plan. Live and learn I guess!
