I screwed up by updating from DELL the firmware for my Sony DVD+-RW DW-D56A
and now it does not operate....so what do I have to do to get it back operating...
I cannot restore it and I am not sure if I want to "RESTore to Factory settings" just incase it won't work and then I can't install software to protect my system or any other DVDsoftware..
Someone on another board suggested I obtain PFS2...firmware....
Any suggestions on what I should "precisely / exactly " do , step by step to get my Laptop Sony DVD +- RW DW-56A working...
Thanks in advance ...

Hi, Ross:
The first thing we need to do is figure out if the firmware update has damaged the drive. For that, I suggest running the Dell diagnostics. See my toolbox (click below) for the link. If the drive either does not pass the test or does not show up in the list of devices, then it's probably dead.
Let me know what you find.

Try the appropriate Microsoft article for your operating system ............
If you are using Windows XP ..............
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/EN-US/
If you are using Windows Vista ............
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/929461
This should clear the error, then see if the drive will read a disc.
If it will not read a disc, once again run the Custom Diagnostics to
see the results.

Ross:
This is a very common issue.
In the CD/DVD FAQ (link below), there are separate instructions for XP and Vista. Make sure you click the link that corresponds to your operating system. The "fix it" article is only for XP.

Did you backup the firmware that was originally on your Sony DW-D56A drive before or during the time you flashed it to the newer version?
I always do this just in case the nnew firmware doesn't work out, so I can flash it back!
Make sure your notebook is plugged in, and download another copy of the A04 firmware update
http://ftp.us.dell.com/rmsd/R104295.EXE
Make sure you install it with Administrative rights(Even in XP) It is possible the one you downloaded was somehow corrupt.
Turn off your AV software and any other anti-malware apps you might have runnnng, as they can interfere with the install.
regards,
Dagra
BTW
The PDS7 A04 firmware is the same file = R104295.EXE so there is no difference look here http://drivers.myfreewares.com/freedownload-34248-dell-sony-dw-d56a-slim-8x-dvd+--rw-firmware-v.pds7-a04-windows-2000-xp-download.html
The ones from SONY.Com are different like this one: http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNA690&upd_id=1921&os_id=7 and is as old as your notebook. It might be an original Sony DW-D56A firmware.

Ross:
You really need to tell us what model Dell you have and your operating system.

No, I was not that smart as I just assumed that DELL was providing me with the correct updates for MY computer alone. Just as I have done for updates from MSN to updatge my OS.........THAT IS MY mistake and I should have known better.....
I will go to safe mode then and go offline and turn off my AV and then try to install the R104295.exe and see if it makes addifference...
thanks for your time and help...

okay I have a DELL inspiron 9300 and run XP as my OS.
The Device manager and i confirmed this by removing the DVD player and that is i have a Sony DVD +- RW -DW-D56A player.
The Properties box says this when i right click and open on the DVD player : Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)
Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.
I ran the Dell (f12 ) diags on the player and it shows or indicates nothing is wrong as it passed the tests after three tries...
but when i go back to the device it still shows this code error.
I went to dell where they indicate the updates for my machine using the service tag and i selected all, but this is what the download for the DVD says
NEC - Firmware Applies to ND-6500A slim 8x DVD+- /RW ...
?? but that is not what my machine has inside it... as I did read the actuall label.
and when i look at the details in the Device instance ID is shows IDE\CDROMSONY_DVD+-RW_DW-D56A_____________________PDS7_____\5&2a87b71a&0&0.0.0
Hopefully this is more info and will help you as well as me solve my problem ..
thanks..for your time thus far....

ross_38,
There is a Firmware for the Sony DW-D56A and it is listed under the Inpiron 9300
CD/DVD list along with 17 other Firmwares for the various drives used in that system.
Dell uses many different devices in the same systems.
However, Firmware may or may not be an issue here. You may have a Filters issue,
which is often accompanied by a Code 41 in the Device Manager. The fact that the
drive appears in the Device Manager with the correct ID may mean the other Firmware
did not install.
Forget about the Firmware at this time until the drive siuation is sorted out.
The following article is for the removal of the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters in the
Registry. One of the Filters may be missing. Follow the Step by Step instructions
and give it a try.

KUDOS much thanks and best of the SEASONS to you, That fixed it ......much apppreaciated your help and all your other colleges for their assistance,
If you don't mind, could you enlighten me as to "what I fixed" with your solution....as I am not sure.....what the filters did...or do...and ....how you knew that particular line inthe registery was the one.....What course if any , such as A++, would that teach me registry and more about computers or make me just a bit more dangerous....but somewhat usefull...as a home user... Thanks for you help and to the rest of the staff...
