The hard drive is toast. You'll need a new, 2.5" 9.5 mm SATA notebook drive.

It helps to include the computer model and the version of windows that's installed.
What was the error message?
Have you tried running Dell Diagnostics extended test on the hard drive?

Age does not matter with hard drive failure, they can fail at anytime.
I've had a new hard drive fail after only 30 days of use.

If you have a Dell warranty in effect on the laptop, then you need to contact Dell's Technical Support for the replacement.
No warranty, you need to buy the hard drive, install it and reinstall the operating system and drivers.
If you don't think you are capable of replacing the hard drive and reinstalling windows, take the laptop to a local computer repair shop for the repair.

If you reside in the US and are the registered owner of the computer, a disc containing the factory-installed operating system specific to your system, can be requested from HERE.
Note: Dell may charge for the disc.
